UK: Conservative Party Leader Faces Revolt

Thu Oct 31, 2002 7:54 am

Micheal Portillo has announced on five (ntl:home, Sky Digital, Telewest Broadband channel 105) (terrestrial channel 5) news that there is a plan to replace the leader of the Conservative Party - Iain Duncan Smith.

It has been just over a year since he was elected leader of the Party and the "quiet man" is facing a not-so-quiet plot.

BBC News article by Political Correspondant - Nyta Mann

However, the leadership challenge has been dismissed as "fantasy" by the Party

Interestingly, five news has no link.

This could be interesting....

Duncan Smith has made no impact whatsoever, his speeches are poor, his policy is not favoured by anyone and generally he is not the guy to cut it as a future British Prime minister.

I have to say, Portillo does come across as just the kind of man the Conservatives might need, in order to become relevant again. I couldn't care less what kind of sexual activities he got up to at Uni that is surely the irrelevant part! (But then again, the Conservatives seem to have a peculiar obssession with homosexuals! Rather ironic, that.....)

IDS comes across as...well, lame.

I think even Hague had more charisma!  Laugh out loud

I am not a Tory supporter, but i must say IDS isn't up to it. (Even people in his party admit it)

No matter what the MP's think, and they see IDS's ineffectiveness every day, the average age of Tory members is over 65, they'll have no truck with Portillo, not only for his bisexual past, but also for his partial recanting of Thatcherism.

Hmm.

I disagree with Arsenal@LHR, I think IDS is totally competent and is up to the challenge. Also GDB, IDS is most effective from what we've seen so far. Give him a chance.

Hague used to run rings around Blair, unfortunately he never looked like a prime minister. The Tory's have no one with the charisma to be an effective leader and Portillo would definately ruin their election chances. Mind you they have had long enough to sort themselves out and they still haven't so their election chances are slim indeed. Labour don't deserve to be re-elected but they will stay in power by default.

What's IDS ever done since entering the commons in 1992? Just opposed and obstructed the Major government with all the rest of the Tory lunatic fringe.
Why make him leader? Because Maggie said so? Well her last choice Hague was good for them wasn't he?
And he's not Portillo or Clarke.

So people who might resonate with the public, might provide effective opposition are no good because of the geriatric membership's obsession with Europe?
Well being knee-jerk anti-Europe really helped them in 1997 and 2001 didn't it?

If they were serious about learning from their mistakes, being in the real world, they'll have had Clarke in '97. But he's a heretic to them, (the Tories are more like a religious cult after all).

Let them rot in opposition, maybe when most of the membership literally dies out they'll get real, which whatever your views is important for democracy.
Having said that, seen the few younger members? Mostly socially inept public schoolboys with odd haircuts!

Finally, even Tory MP's say that IDS actually stands for In Deep Shit!
