Fri Nov 01, 2002 9:37 am

Who's for this win win situation I am and i dont care if national teams are abolished into one for the UK as fifa president wantsall I want is to watch what would be the greates most competive leauge ever that would surpas la lega. If the Old firm where to join it the revinue for all teams would rocket espcaly the old firm who would see an even greate season ticket demand than they do just now.

If Rangers and Celtic want to join English football, I would insist in them starting at the very bottom (i.e. 10 divisions below the Conference) as it would not be fair on those Division 1 clubs who have earned the right to be promoted into the Premiership but would most likely be denied to accommodate the "old INfirm". Neither Rangers nor Celtic will do much anyway as they are unused to playing against above average sides week in, week out. Consequently, a successful season for both these teams will be to avoid relegation.

In monetary terms, there will be no "rocketing revenue increase" as a fair number of clubs at the moment already enjoy attendences that are either close to or at full capacity. The biggest winners will be those clubs who have few supporters i.e. if Wimbledon make in back into the Premiership, they will probably have a spare 30,000 seats or so at Milton Keynes (cf. their last home game saw a record low attendence for Division 1...just 849, of which 200 or so were away fans!). Television rights may be a different story but even here I would imagine Sky not stumping up much more money than they do currently for rights to the Premiership; in fact, I believe these rights to be overvalued at present!

Rangers and Celtic would probably be successful in the long term but I too think that they would struggle week in / out. They therefore run the risk of being relegated in their first season and what would happen then? It seems they only want the Premiership for the money so if they were in the Nationwide they could run the risk of being worse off than they are now.

They are also used to success in Scotland. How would the fans react if they are no longer top dogs?

As David stated, it is unfair to the other Nationwide clubs for them to come straight into the Premier League and to be honest who apart from Rangers and Celtic want them in?

Although it would bring better competition for Rangers and Celtic, I dont see them joining the Engerlish premier league for at least 10 years anyway.

Having watched both Old Firm teams a few times this season I would say that Rangers are currently better equipped to do well in the Premiership, and there is little chance of them being relegated. Rangers play with a counter attacking style and fast wingers (e.g. Lovenkrands) who break at pace, whereas Celtic seem to rely on set pieces or inadequate defending. I don't think Celtic would be relegated either, but on current form I think Rangers look to be the better side.
I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

There is also the small matter of having them playing in another country having to be ratified by (a) UEFA and (b) FIFA. I believe UEFA previously announced that they would not allow it to happen...if Celtic and Rangers aren't going to be playing Scottish football, they may well be in the "Atlantic League" which I think will comprise those clubs who have outgrown their own domestic leagues.

By bringing Celtic and Rangers into the fold, there would have to be a major restructuring of the leagues that would make the creation of the Premiership seem like a walk in the park. The various F.A.s involved in uniting into a UK F.A. would try to get what's best for them, and more than likely, the clubs in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will get the short end of the stick. And imagine how many deserving players will get left off of a unified national team? Some players who play in the lower leagues only get the chance to play internationally because they are from Wales, N. Ireland, and Scotland, and get the call up for those 'countries' international matches. I think the other teams in the SPL ought to just suck it up and deal with the fact that they'll probably never have runs like Celtic and Rangers have had over the last 2 decades, but they can always hope, even with the Old Firm still in the SPL.

They'll never be ( I hope) a unified UK team.
