Bubonic Plague In New York~

Thu Nov 07, 2002 10:26 am

That's disturbing...just plain disturbing. How can this incident be isolated? And how did it get to New Mexico?

Single cases of bubonic plague show up on a fairly regular basis, usually in a dead animal sent for testing by wildlife officials. However two human cases in one place at one time are extremely rare.

Luckily, bubonic plague while nasty and painful can be treated quite effectively with a range of antibiotics including penicillin.

If the man who is in critical condition dies, it will most likely be because of brain damage from the high fever.

Up, up and away!

Ah, people worry too much. I work in New York, not that far from the hospital where the couple is being treated, and I'm not worried at all.
I'd say more, but it's getting painful to type ... danged swellings under my arms, and what a headache.
"Let me think about it" = the coward's way of saying "no"
