Gibraltar Votes To Stay British

Fri Nov 08, 2002 4:55 pm

Gibraltar has unanimously voted to remain British in a referendum. Only 187 people wanted the Spanish to have some sort of sovereignty.

The message is clear. Both the UK and Spain live in a democracies so they should abide by the people's wishes.

Nah, they won't do anything of the sort! However, if the vote was the other way round, both Goverments would have embraced the result and signed treaties within 12 hours.

The curious thing about Gibraltar is that it isn't some British enclave in Spain - the people are overwhelmingly ethnically Spanish; they just want Britain to remain sovereign. Hardly surprising really, Spain has attempted to bully them into submission and people don't really respond to that. Memories are long, and modern democratic Spain will have to wait a long time for them to fade.

I wonder if Spain will have a referendum in Ceuta and Mellilla?

This should put the issue to rest. Neither Spain nor the UK have any mandate discuss any further the future of Gibraltar.

Whether Gibraltar remains British or not can only be decided by the Gibraltarians themselves, no one else. They clearly want to remain British, so why all the crap about joint Anglo-Spanish control?

The irony is that parts of Spain would probabarly like to secede themselves.

Not here to defend the Spanish or anything (don't care either way), but both the UK and Spain have regions within their countries where lots of people wish to secede...most of Europe's countries have those. My question is why not let them... they'll want to join the EU about two months later!! LOL.

It's funny how the trends can be contradictory to each other and occur simultaneously. In Europe you have the process of unification in one level, and in another level many regions and towns that wish independence... hmmmm, you know what I think...
