A Fun Survey: Your Favorite James Bond Actor

Fri Nov 22, 2002 12:14 am

Greetings folks...
Being a Bond fan, and waiting for tomorrow's opening (11-22) of "Die Another Day"...I was wondering who's your favorite James Bond actor. We had...

Pierce Brosnan...4 Bond films to date...

Sean Connery...7 films.

Timothy Dalton...2 films.

George Lazenby...1 film.

Roger Moore...7 films.

In my humble opinion, the original Bond, Sir Sean Connery is my favorite Bond.
This is not meant to be an arguement over the best..just your personal favorite is all I'm asking. All replies appreciated. Regards.

Don't laugh...but Roger Moore.

Maybe it's just because that's who I grew up with. Maybe it's because he managed to save the world with nary a hair out of place. Maybe it was that loveable cameo in Cannonball Run*, spoofing himself. I just liked him

As a lifelong Bond Fan, I gladly admit Sean Connery would be an easy thing to say, but I think it is much more complicated:
1. Connery is outdated and so are his 7 movies, out of which Diamonds are forever was a bad mistake, because he kicked Lazenby, who deserved a second chance, but got none.
2. Moore was the guy I grew up with, too, and he started very strong, Live and let die, Golden gun and the Spy who loved me were among the best, nevertheless, he was responsible for the grave downturn the series took, Moonraker was ridiculous but at least funny, a view to a kill was devastating, the worst ever made!!!
3. Dalton was great, really great, and his debut the living daylights is one of the best of the whole series, maybe the very best! But he was unlucky, because Moore had done so much damage, that the series was unpopular worldwide, and he couldn't save it.
4. Brosnan is the best you can get nowadays, he grew into the role like I wouldn't have dreamt...great Pierce!! And keep on, and I just love the way, the James Bond series came back to full, during his time, and it's fun to watch!

have fun!!

I am also a very big James Bond fan. My favorite Bond actor is of course Sean Connery followed by Roger Moore. I like the old movies most, especially the first movie: Dr. No with Connery. Diamonds are forever is my favorite Bond movie with Moore.

Andreas...

You can't blame Roger Moore for bad scripts and production.....there was a period starting with Diamonds Are Forever where it seemed practically every film had to involve bland US West Coast settings....even Austin Powers goofed about how the Bond producers tried to make Southern California look like Afghanistan, Central America, wherever.....it was the "cheap" years.

I have to admit I kind of rolled my eyes when I first heard it would be Brosnan, but he grows on ya.

Still no guesses on "Roger Moore's" real name from Cannonball Run? Here's a hint: It wasn't 'George Hamilton'.

Sorry to correct you but Diamonds is Sean Connery, believe me!!!
He made his first few movies in a row, then retired, handed over to George Lazenby (On her mejesty's secret service, good one!!), then retired from retirement to do Diamonds, and then really retired for good, and no, don't come up with never say never again, that one was pretty good but is NO REGULAR BOND MOVIE!!!

though I never liked his playacting...too, I don't know how to put it...just not my liking!
It's just that you identify the movie with its hero, and I remember Moore to be the hero of the worst, it's somewhat psychological, I think! But basically you're absolutely right, they tried to turn the guy into some sort of chewing-gum cartoon hero, and that doesn't work!
btw: Afghanistan in living daylights was done in Morocco!!

No I know Diamonds was Connery but it was also the first of several unforunate visits to Las Vegas, San Fransisco, LA.....very "un-Bond" locales in my opinion. Maybe it's just the America-centricism in me, but when I think of Bond, I think of Monaco, Vienna, Bangkok, Hong Kong....even Moore's jaunt to New Orleans and Dalton's adventures in the Florida Keys seemed exotic by comparison.

TWA L1011 wins the prize.

In Cannonball Run we find out "Roger Moore" is really the spoiled playboy Seymour Goldfarb Junior (son of Seymour Goldfarb, God rest his soul) and heir to the Goldfarb Girdles fortune!

If you're a true Bond fan , you need to see that movie. Moore (with the producers blessings) spoofed himself in a way Austin Powers couldn't touch. The sleek original Astin Martin plays a key role in the film and James Bond himself forgets which button is the ejector seat and ends up in the drink...

(Interesting fact: In the scene where Bond is being pursued by the California Highway Patrol and he uses the famous "slippery oil" out of the back of the Astin Martin....the police cruiser does this industrial strength spin-out. Apparently the stunt driver hadn't been harnassed properly and ended up loose in that wildly gyrating car, seriously injured. I seem to recall he ended up with all the film's profits after the lawsuit.)

Another interesting fact: There was no script for Cannonball Run . They literally made it up as they went along.

Well done Tee Way

was for Patrick (sabena332), he said that was his favorite Moore-Movie.
As for the location: YES!! I couldn' agree more, that's why I love the 2 dalton movies, and the early Moore's, live and let die was great, and New orleans just perfect and golden gun...well I love Hongkong though there is a grave mistake: When Bond boards the boat after the sniper attack in front of the bar, the guy asks him if he wants to go to Kowloon. I know the bar, it's nearls as famous as the Bond Rock in Thailand's Phang Nga and IT IS IN KOWLOON, so if he boards a boat, he would want to go to Hongkong Island instead!!

Easily Connery for my favorite, but Brosnan actually makes sitting through the blatant product placements worth it. I have to admit it though, decades ago I thought he was great in Remington Steele, but unfortunately time has done nothing for his acting.

1) Sean Connery: thinking in terms of when his films were made, he was the actor for the job
2) Pierce Brosnan: definitely the difinitive "Millineum Bond"
3) Roger Moore: yeah, some of the movies were a little off, but his lines were some of the best. Besides, "Live and Let Die" was great, especially the red-neck scenes shot down here. "A secret agent?......On who's side?!"
4) Lazenby/Dalton: didn't care for any of their movies

As an asie to the "Cannonball Run" topic: there was a death in the filming of one of the stunts in that movie. I believe it was the scene where (Burt Reynolds/Dom DeLuise?) are hauling butt down the highway swerving back and forth across the road. One of the stunt cars wiped out, and the driver was killed.

you are correct, Diamonds was indeed with Connery. Than are both of my favorite Bond movies with Connery but I like Moore also very much.

Connery. He had that cold edge to him that none of the other Bonds have been able to duplicate. Roger Moore was just too glib, and Pierce Brosnen, while good, is no Sean Connery.

BTW- "Goldfinger", best ever.

FYI...this list is who appeared as Bond in their Bond movies...

Pierce Brosnan
GoldenEye - 1995
Tomorrow Never Dies - 1997
World Is Not Enough - 1999
Die Another Day - 2002

Sean Connery
Doctor No - 1962
From Russia With Love - 1963
Goldfinger - 1964
Thunderball - 1965
You Only Live Twice - 1967
Diamonds Are Forever - 1971
Never Say Never Again - 1983

Timothy Dalton
The Living Daylights - 1987
License To Kill - 1989

George Lazenby
On Her Majesty's Secret Service - 1969

Roger Moore
Live & Let Die - 1973
Man With The Golden Gun - 1974
The Spy Who Loved Me - 1977
Moonraker - 1979
For Your Eyes Only - 1981
Octopussy - 1983
A View To A Kill - 1985

Interesting banter about the Cannonball Run movie...not only Moore spoffing himself, but Peter Fonda almost spoofing his Easy Rider character as well. And anyone remember seeing a very young Jackie Chan in that flick as well?  Wink/being sarcastic Great feedback from everyone.  Wink/being sarcastic Regards.

Best "007" - Sean Connery

Best movie - "Goldfinger"

I think Cannonball Run was a spoof of another comedy, adventure, Gumball Rally. If you like Cannonball Run, you'll love, Gumball Rally.

I must say Timothy Dalton. Though he doesn't neccesarily bring the comedic aspect to Bond like Moore, Connery, and even Brosnan do, he does bring a serious Bond, one that is focused, one that isn't so Lassaiz Faire (sp?)

Brosnan is second. He is suave, has the comedic element, and is a great action star.

My favourite Bond would be Pierce Brosnan, brilliant actor. Plus his Bond movies were some of my favourite. "Tomorrow never dies" and "Goldeneye" were classics. More importantly, Brosnan is your modern day 007, he fit's the role perfectly.

If anyone is in the US right now (9:51 EST), OHMSS is playing right now on TNN. I am convinced; Lazenby is a horrible Bond. What a bad movie.

TNN is showing a 007 movie a night for the next week, starting at 9 EST. Good deal.

i only saw about 1.5 Bond movies (i want to see the new one so hopefully soon it will be 2.5), "Goldfinger" which i LOVED (i probably didn't see the whole thing b/c it was on ABC when they were running all of them), and one of the Brosnan ones..something about a Russian missile..but they're all like that Big grin

Goldfinger was amazing Connery fit the part, and I really want to see Thunderball  Big thumbs up

Just One Thing, Guys: Never Say Never Again

Fri Nov 22, 2002 6:02 pm

is not a regular entry into the Bond series, it is a remake of Thunderball, probably the weakest Connery-Bond. Though I love that movie (never...), there are no Bond insignia to be found: No Bond theme by Monty Norman, but a great score by Legrand and Alpert anyway, no opener with the man firing at that spiral or whatever this is supposed to be etc. So let's put this one in brackets, though it hammered the regular Bond opening at the same time (Octopussy) to shreds at the box office!

Favourite Bonds ?
Connery/Brosnan in a tie
Hate Moore/Dalton

And I must be the only one who liked OHMSS (though I'm also a Diana Rigg fan)

As for Die Another Day, I'm facing a dilemma right now : In France where I live, the only place I could see the movie in English is Paris, and I'm not going there before Christmas. By that time, it will have left the big screens, so... what do I do ?
Do I see it this week end in a French dubbed version (not bad, but a lot of jokes are left out - I think I was the only French guy in the theater to smile at the end of TWINE when Bond said 'I though Christmas came only once a year'  Wink/being sarcastic ) on a big screen, or dlo I wait till Christmas and see it in a small theater but in English ?

decisions decisions... I think I'll go this week end. An An124 deserves a big screen...

I have to go with Connery every day....

But I did think he was too old for Never say Never again.

Ahh Cannonball run.....there is a classic flick. You know a movie is going to be good when you have Ray Stevens doing the theme song.

Anybody have any comments on that persistant rumor that Roger wants to play a Bond villian in an upcomming film???

Connery, then Brosnan, hated Moore, Dalton was ok, Lazenby, to me doesn't hack it as Bond, also I believe that this is the first Bond film without Desmond Llewlyn as "Q". Loved that exasperated old man. What about Peter Sellers and David Niven?

Sean Connery for sure. Roger more was ok followed by Brosnan.

And yes, this is the first Bond movie without Llewlyn playing "Q". I think I remember reading that this would have been his last Bond movie anyway but he was killed in a car accident several years ago.  Sad

Andreas:

"anyway, no opener with the man firing at that spiral or whatever this is supposed to be etc."

The "spiral" is a gun barrel. You're supposed to be looking down the inside of the barrel, that is aimed at Bond. What you're seeing is the rifleing down the inide of the barrel that imparts a spin on the bullet to increase accuracy.

It becomes obvious after you clean a few, it really does look like that.

Dalton all the way.

He portrayed the Bond character in the appropriate ruthlessness and brutality. This becomes especially clear in Licence to Kill, due to that great antagonism with Sánchez.

I have mixed feelings towards the new one, "Stirb an einem anderen Tag" (can there be a dumber translation??!) - I found all Brosnan films to be total crap with Goldeneye the worst one. However, they have slightly improved with each try, maybe they finally manage to satisfy me this time.

In Goldeneye Bond was reduced to just another generic super hero (Batman, Superman, Spideman, bah) which is totally out of line with the general idea behind the series. I guess it ties with Diamonds are Forever as worst ever, while Goldfinger slightly outclasses Licence to Kill on the list´s other end.

Daniel Smile

At least I´ll be able to watch it in English, due to the huge American military presence here in Mannheim - some crucial double entendres are just untranslatable...
