Test Your Knowledge About The World

Sun Nov 24, 2002 8:50 pm

http://geosurvey.nationalgeographic.com/geosurvey/templates/question_1.html

This is a pretty funny test to take, although it's really scary that 3% of the Swedes who took the test doesn't know where their country is. (I know, there are more scary results).

How many correct answers did you get? I got 20  Smokin cool

Oops. I got 19 out of 20.

It was the question about which was the Religion with the most followers that got me.

Why is that on a Geography test?? It seems more of a political science question to me.

Only 89% of Americans could find the USA on a map, and only 80% could find Mexico? What the hell? I'm moving to Canada.

20 for 20 ...woo-hoo!

May I ask how many of my countrymen were, like me, totally embarassed (and yet totally unsurprised) by the poor showing of the USA in this quiz. This stuff was very simple, and there is no excuse for anyone in a developed country not getting at least 16-18 of these questions correct.

For Christ sake, 11% of Americans couldn't find the USA on the friggin' map  Pissed
This is pathetic. I just hope everyone knows that not all of us are that ignorant.

LOL, I got 19 out of 20.

It was that damn AIDS question, I watched casualty last night where they kept going on about how this guy had gone to Asia and could most likely have got syphalis because of the high amount of STD's over there.

If i'd thought more logically, I should have remembered the huge aid campains for Africa to do with AIDS and HIV. Damnit.

Anyway, that was pretty easy.

The question I was surprised at was that so many Americans got the israel question wrong, I mean, bloody hell!!!

The Afghanistan question was the only one that was marginally difficult. Until a couple of months ago I thought it was more nearer Albania than Pakistan. I nearly chose Iran but I realized that Afghanistan doesn't have a sea-shore.

I wasn't counting exact, but I got between 18 and 20 out of 20 right, in other words 95% and above.

It amazes me how dumb people can be. I was also amazed at how smart the Swedes are too. I knew they were smart, but in comparison to the other nationalities represented, I didn't know they were THAT smart.

I must strongly question the answer that christianity is the most followed religion in the world. Surely it is Budhism or even Islam ?

What precisely does it mean to 'follow' a religion anyway, hopefully it is more than just claiming to be part of it although getting numbers on true adherants only would be pretty diificult.

20/20 ...although I almost missed the religion question...but then I remembered a newscast recently which stated that islam would soon overtake christianity as the most followed religion in the world....I must concur that the results were pitiful for the U.S. There is no excuse for anyone to be that ignorant of the world around them. I was highly impressed by all the other countries though...I was also suprised at how Canada had a lower percentage than the U.S. on the Israel question.

19/20 also because of the islam largest religion thing.

but...
ONE IN TWO BRITONS COULDN'T LOCATE MEXICO OR THE PACIFIC OCEAN!!

That's awful - but it shows that like Americans - Europeans naturally are much more concerned with affairs on their side of the ocean - so back off next time an American points to Greece and says he wants to visit the vatican.

I also "Missed" the religion question. I maintain that Isalm does indeed have more followers the Christianity. I think the poll used may be a bit skewed. Perhaps the question was multiple choice when given to the worlds population? And no, I do not mean the NG test. I mean the base question they used for their answer. I know people that claim to be "christian" although they can't list the books of the New Testament or the apostles.

Islam is, in my opinion, the largest religion in the world.

...about the US schools here in NC...I wouldnt pin the the blame on the school systems alone...I know some very well informed student friends of mine who are well learned in international issues. We were all trained in a rural NC school. Its not that the opportunity for learning isnt there...The problem is that all too often students here show a general apathy for learning about outside issues. They would rather worry about if they are going to the winter formal with Stephany than where in the world Israel is...Its a little sad ...but here at least...it is the truth.

I went for Islam on the religion question too.

I think what throws people is that they count all Christian faiths together as opposed to Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, Mormon ect.

This makes the Christian population seem smaller then it is.

20/20. Freshman at Uni. 20/20....was it on ABC or CBN? The average UK student must have very short memory, I was taught where Mexico and Pacific Ocean was and tested countlessly in Primary 5 in the UK! Average is of course much much lower than Eton and all those famous top schools.

I heard that even Islam has its own variations although I can't elaborate in detail.

My understanding of different christian faiths is that if they all recognise the Nicene Creed, they are Christians. The Creed states the fundamental beliefs of Christianity

I got 18 out of 20,

1. I missed the one about the Taliban and Al Qaeda because I heard one time that the Taliban movement began in Pakistani Islamic schools. Anyone else hear that? So I marked Pakistan instead of Afghanistan, basically second-guessed myself out of that one.

2. I had an attack of dyslexia with the "westernmost town" map. Argh.
