Encounter With The Police

Fri Nov 29, 2002 5:21 am

Hey all,

Today I was at the local football game and at half time, i met up with some friends and we left the school's field for a few minutes and went down. We saw this Christmas Tree lot and the gate was open so we decided we would go check it out since we had nothing better to do. We went in the gate and just started walking around the aisles of trees and stuff. I was done so I went outside the lot of trees and just stood in the parking lot waiting for my friends to finish looking around. All of a sudden, this guy stops his truck and says "what the hell is going on here?!". He yells at us and starts accusing us of stealing. Supposedly, the place was closed, but the gate was wide open, there was no "no trespassing sign". So he told us to follow him and we wrote our names and addresses down for him (which I now know I really shouldn't have done, but I wanted to avoid him calling the police so I was just cooperating). Anyways, he calls the police and the cop arrives and asks him what happened and he says he caught us in his lot. The police tells him to wait somewhere else when and the cop started talking to us. He asked what happened and said, verbatim, "and don't give me any f*cking bullsh*t", because he was convinced that we were probably up to no good. So i proceeded to tell him about how we were just looking around because we thought it was open. He then took our school ID's, patted us down and found nothing. Another cop went into the lot to check if we had stolen anything and came back and reported that nothing had been taken. I heard the cop mumble to the other cop that "these kids don't seem like the type". Nevertheless, he took down our names, addresses, phone numbers, and DOB. He went and told the guy that he was all set, we apologized once more to the guy. The cop came over to us, gave our ID's back, and said "yeah that guys a bit of a nut. i'm going to pretend i'm yelling at you right now. Basically you guys were at the wrong place at the wrong time. Just be careful next time." The whole time, the police officer was basically just making jokes with us. He pronounced my name wrong, and laughed and said sorry about that. He told us we could go wait inside some the place so we would stay warm but it was locked so he told us to "stay outside in the cold and try to make yourselves comfortable", followed by a chuckle.

The cops just didn't buy into what the guy was trying to pitch about us stealing stuff, and they knew that it was ridiculous that he kept his gate open with everything just laying there for anyone to take. The key is to be courteous with police though. If you sound understanding and even a little remorseful of what you did (I said that I understood where the guy was coming from), they'll sympathize a little more with you if it's a case like this.

Hey, your story is better then some other kids when the other kid was skating on benches and ruining the paint and the wood. He was all worked up because the cops kicked him out for skatboarding, but he was destroying public property.

Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten, Uptown, what now? Lets make it happen.
