You Want Cold?

Wed Dec 04, 2002 8:57 am

Try this...

KMWN 032256Z 32070G75KT 1/16SM BLSN FZFG VV000 M25/M25 RMK VRY LGT ICG

Mount Washington, New Hampshire, 03Dec/2256Z, winds from 320 degrees at 70 knots gusting to 75 knots, visibility 1/16th of a mile in blowing snow and freezing fog, vertical visibility zero. Temperature -25C (-13F), dewpoint -25C (-13F), remarks, very light icing.

(That's roughly a -50F windchill factor...)

FYI, there's no airport here, just a weather service office. The winds commonly get above 100 knots...

SWA TPA-
Yep, they're part of the White Mountains.

For what it's worth, it's a tad bit brisk here in NH today. It was about 18 for a high today with the winds from 22-28MPH out of the NW. Still warmer than Upper MI was today. Single digits.

Wow! I thought I was freezing my butt off today while waiting for the employee shuttle (@4am) this morning in TPA! I seriously need to hop on our non-stop TPA-MHT flt!!!!
How far are these mountains from MHT? I am really wanting to see snow (30 years of not seeing is too much!) and have some time off this week. I was thinking of going to MDW and keeping my fingers crossed but this sounds 100% better! Trade ya some white sandy beaches for some white soft (is it soft?) snow!

Give me a break!

That's a warm winter day in most Northern Canadian communities. Try -40C without the wind factor. Places like Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg hit that routinely. Add some wind and snow and it's a little more brisk.

Mt. Washington holds the record for fastest wind speed ever recorded? Are you sure? Record for where? New Hampshire? It's only 6000 feet high! There are thousands of mountain peaks worldwide, including North America, that hit 10 to 20,000 feet or more and I'm sure there'll be a few with weather stations. Mauna Kea comes to mind.

If I were betting a wind speed record, I'd put my money on some place in Antarctica.

Wind Speed Record goes to Oklahoma

On May 3, 1999 as tornados ravaged Oklahoma scientist measured the highest recorded wind speed at about 7:00 pm near Moore, Oklahoma. A wind speed of 318 mph was recorded where a tornado killed four people and destroyed 250 homes. The fastest wind measured prior was 286 mph on April 26, 1991 in a tornado near Red Rock, Oklahoma. The 318 mph speed placed the tornado 1 mph below an F6 on the 0 to 6 Fujita scale. No tornado has ever been classified as an F6.

The Highest Recorded Windspeed on Earth - April 12, 1934. Mt Washington, NH measures a windspeed of 231 mph, which still stands as the highest windspeed ever recorded in the world.

It really didn't feel that cold here today. Compared to some of the nights in college along Lake Superior, this was almost comfortable. Good skiing day!!

To keep an aviation theme to this, I watched a Clipper J31 fight the wind on final today at PSM.. He said he only had a gain/loss of -5, but the wind sure was throwing the little prop around!

... After reading Android's post, I believe that the Mt. Washington wind was a sustained wind. I'm certainly not a weather buff, but there may be a difference.

Not really that much, for a mountain.. Only 256" per year. Though they topped 556" in 1968.

Arrow,

He's actually accurate with that statement. Mt. Washington actually holds some of the worlds weather records, including wind speed and wind chill if I'm not mistaken.

SWA TPA,

We just had a little over 4 inches here in Chicago... and we will probably expect a little more tomorrow. Snow is cool with me (admittedly it was nice to look at today on my way to work), but not too much of it. It kinda gets to be a pain in the ass cleaning a bunch of it off my car and then having to shovel around it and then having to drive around the side streets extremely slow slipping and sliding all over the place. I pretty much have to add another 20 minutes or so to my travel time.

At this point I'll take the white, sandy beaches over the white stuff that's all over my car right now! Big grin

Here's a great website on the mountain.

And the mountain holds the record for highest recorded/observed winds in the world:

Thieler --

I stand corrected. I don't think the tornadoes should count as wind speed, so I'll defer to the Mt. Washington record. A little strange for such a small mountain -- but there's no weather station on Everest, I guess.

As for snowfall, our local mountains here (4000 footers) get 6-7 meters in good years. So far this year -- nada. Looks like a bad ski year shaping up, unfortunately. Even Whistler is bare.

But c'mon, SWA TPA -- -25 isn't really cold -- just cold enough to make frozen orange juice. Up here, if you go outside and spit, and it freezes before it hits the ground, put your coat on!

Well today morning it went to almost -28C here in Montreal with windchill. In Jan/Feb it sometimes goes to down to -40/-50C with windchill....

Check out Russia

Selagoncy with -53°C/-62°F

And that is without wind chill factor.

Now, that is cold

I was surprised that my flight school had just suspended operations when I checked in for a cross country at 10:00 this morning. The lowest wind chill is -25F and apparently it was -28F. That's cold!!!

A mountain in New Hampshire? That's just too cute. Here in Tucson we'd call it a large hill. People in Lee Vining, California would call it a bump.

Anyway. "Mount" Washington is not only the place with the highest sustained wind ever recorded, it is the point that sees sunrise before any point in the US. It is, along with any point north of the 35th parallel, too damn cold for human habitation.

SWA TPA, you've never seen snow? Open your freezer and put your head in for 10 minutes. Now imagine that feeling 24 hours a day for 5 months. Now imagine lifting a 100 pound weight 300 times every day while freezing your a** off (at 0400) just to get to work by 0700. Finally count your blessings. Snow is for penguins and polar bears.
The day you stop learning is the day you should die.

Android,

I do believe the Fujita scale goes up only to F5, but I will double check that.

The Fujita scale as Tbar220 said, only goes to F5. F0-F5 is the scale.
