Whistle-blowers: Hero's Or Traitors?

Wed Dec 11, 2002 10:38 am

Interesting article here, I've heard about the Pentagon Papers, but knew nothing about the person behind the leak.
Now this most significant whistle-blower is back, with a book and pungent comments about Iraq.
Is he a hero, or a traitor?
Has he anything useful to say on current events, or is he merely trying to reclaim old glories?
If you were in a position when you knew something explosive, and had the ability to leak it to the press, would you?,3604,857052,00.html

Ellsberg was a hero. He blew the lid off all manner of unseemly events surrounding Viet Nam and let the American people know what was really going on. Whistle-blowers are almost always immensely courageous people who believe in a principle, and they put their careers on the line for it. This guy went to jail for it.

The people who chased and persecuted him are the traitors -- they are traitors to the fundamental freedoms that the American nation was founded on, and I'm sure there's still lots of them around. Pray that there are more Daniel Ellsbergs around.

Would I leak something like that to the press? You bet. Of course I'm a journalist so I'm hardly objective about the whole thing. I've had my share of significant leaks that hit the front page.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.
