How Do You Use Kazaa?

Fri Dec 13, 2002 10:14 am

The title says it all.

They just got it on the computer at work, figured out how to search for songs, but is there any way to put them on a CD with it???

By using Kazaa, all you are doing is downloading the files (mp3s, mpegs, etc.) from another user to your computer. You will need a CD burning software to be able to burn them on to a CD. Go to http://www.download.com and download some free trial ones.

And for a more step by step process-

First you will need to (most likely) create uncompressed audio files from what you download, a typical CD quality audio file uses roughly 10 megs/minute of disk space, obviously for a 74 minutes CD, this would take a LONG time to download. What you're downloading with Kazaa is a compressed version of the song; think of it as a form of digital shorthand (don't ask me HOW it works, that's the best I can do!) to get the data rate down to around 1 meg/minute (roughly, depending on the quality). You'll have to convert the file to it's uncompressed format before you put it on an audio CD.

Some burning software will do this for you automaticly, the version of Nero that I use doesn't, so what I do is use a program called winamp that you probibly already have on your computer, if you don't (get the 2.x version, 3.x is still buggy as hell) with this you can not only listen, but convert the .mp3 files to .wav

You can then burn the .wav's to an audio CD using the cd burning software (that is if you have a CD writer, they're down to 60-100USD last I checked (sigh, not 5 years ago I remember paying $300 WITH my employee discount for a 2x1 internal writer...)

Any questions feel free to drop me a line,

god this topic is annoying the hell out of me because theres a song i want to download and I don't know what its called. 80s song sounds like its from the police but maybe not. Very poppy sounds like some black guys singing it - heard it in the background of the hbo movie Live From Baghdad.

Damnit!

I am at work now and they have NERO 5 on the computer...

Is this the same version that you are running???

Will an MP3 run on a normal CD player???

Yeah, that's the version I have. Near as I can tell you MIGHT be able to just "drag and drop" MP3 files to Nero on an audio CD format, I don't because the time it takes to decode the MP3 is longer than it takes to write the CD, and I end up with buffer problems.

SOME newer CD players will play an audio CD encoded with MP3's, but they're not very common, usefull sometimes as you can fit roughly 10x the ammount of music on a CD that way, but if you want to be able to play the MP3's on any CD player, you'll want to write them in CD audio format.

In Nero, when you open it up, you should get a window, on the left side is a column of the differant formats you can burn the CD in. You'll want to select "CD Audio" I would leave most of the other options as the default, it does have a very good online help system though, explaining what all the differant options do.

my god, what am I still doing up... oh, right, I got in at 0400 yesterday morning and slept until noon...
