Songs Mentioning Airliners/aircarriers..?

Sun Dec 15, 2002 4:37 am

Hi there,
I would like to make a collection of songs
on my database that contained names of
airplanes or airlines.
Could you add here what songs you know
of?
At the moment I could only remember
one song which is: "It Never Rains In Southern
California" by Albert Hammond.
It mentions a west bound 747.
For a time I couldn't help but switch them
lyrics to ... Western 747! Something, I think
never existed!

Kindest regards,
Advanced

There is a Carpenters song from the early 70's with a line about taking off on a 707. Can't recall the name.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), Calling America:

Lyrics:

Told her that there was a place like heaven
Across the water on a 747
Yeah, we're living in
In a modern world......

There's this terrible song all over the air currently in France, called 'Manhattan-Kabul'. They want to show the point of view of two innocent victims of the Sept 11 tragedy, i.e. a worker killed in the WTC attack, and an Afghan child dying under the bombs.

So, of course they mention airliners. Lyrics in French are : "Un sept cent quarante-sept/s'est ecrasé sur mes fenêtres".

Attention please, the translation in English : "A Seven-Four-Seven juts crashed into my window".

And yes, the song was written more than 6 months after the attack.

Doesn't EXACTLY fit your subject, but it makes a reference to flying. From Marc Cohn's "Walking in Memphis"--

"Put on my blue suede shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
W. C. Handy - won 't you look down over me
Yeah I got a first class ticket
But I'm as blue as a boy can be"

Steve Miller Band - 'Jet Airliner' (1975)
mentions 707.

Earth Wind & Fire - 'Lets Groove' (1981)
.....and you glide like a 747"

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - 'Straight Into Darkness' (1982)
...looking out of a window on a 747, there was nothing but black sky"

I remember hearing, years ago, a song with the lines:
L.A. International Airport,
Where the big jet engines roar

That's all I remember of the lyrics, which were sung by a woman.
"Let me think about it" = the coward's way of saying "no"

Hi there,
thanks for all these suggestions.
BTW. I just remembered two more songs
mentioning flying and airliner(s).

Frank Sinatra: Come Fly With Me (late 50s-early 60s)

Modern Talking: Jet Airliner (ca.1986)

"Die with me" by Type O Negative mentions JFK and KLM:

Now like a bird
She flew away
To chase her dreams
Of books and praise
Still I miss her
Yeah I miss her
Since she's gone

At JFK
Who played the fool?
Self-pity sick
Jet-fuel perfume
Still I miss her
yeah I miss her
Since she's gone

Girl I want to die with you
In each other's arms
We'll drown in flame

If this time were the last time
Could I hold you all life long?
Since this time is the last time
Can I hold you all night long?

Lay your head down, for the last time

Hey KLM
AT&T
The UK post system
Do you still love me?
Still I miss her
Yeah I miss her
Since she's gone

How about that David Bowie's song about a Space Shuttle launch... (I think, I don't understand all the lyrics) "ground control to..." etc. It's really a great song!

I don't know if one really cares about but there is a Swiss Group called "Patent Ochsner" they have a song called "Bälpmoos". The airport in Bern is called Bern-Belp but I'm not pretty sure if they mean the airport or the city around.

Great trip report AMS-STO by Billy Joel :

http://www.golyr.de/display.php?view_id=8024

The sins of Amsterdam
Were still a recent surprise
And we were flying over
Scandinavian Skies
We climbed towards the sun
We turned and cursed as one
We pulled the shades
And closed our eyes
The Stockholm city lights
Were slowly starting to rise
And we were strapped against
Those Scandinavian skies
The landing gear came down
And touched the Swedish ground
And we were all so paralyzed
On the plane
We were mainly sound and lights
In the veins
We could play the blues all night
The tour of Germany
Was bleeding into our eyes
And we were sailing over
Scandinavian skies
We had the Midas touch
Until we met the Dutch
And they exhausted our supplies
Who's to pay?
For this international flight
Who could stay
We were only there for the night
We watched the power fall
Inside the Olso hall
While all the cold Norweigians cried
Who could say
What was left and where was right?
By the way
I coudl play the blues all night

That would be "Back in the USSR", Perth.

The artist escapes my memory just now but here are the lyrics.
"Coming in from London, just over the border, flying on a big airliner. Chicken flying everywhere around the plane, Lord it couldn't get much finer. Coming into Los Angelees, bringing in a couple of keys, don't check my bags if you please Mr customs man."

Is that indeed the Steve Miller song refered to previously? I think it is.

On the Eric Clapton/BB King collaberation "Riding with the King", the title song includes the line:
"Get on a TWA to the promised land, Every woman, child and man, Gaets a Cadillac and a great big diamond ring, Don't you know you're riding with the king?"

Swissgabe: The song is about the airport of Berne. You can read the lyrics at the following website: http://www.raffiniert.ch/lpato.html. You just have to scroll down a bit to the right song.

I'm not going to post the text here, it's in Swiss German. I don't think a lot of people would actually understand the lyrics...  Wink/being sarcastic

Yeah thanx IMP!
I was hoping I'd back here before anyone noticed - but with work and a.net downloading at 1 bit/hour you beat me!
Awoke around 3am this morning thinking "That Beatles' track, what did I post as the title? Surely not ... "
But I did...

Obviously I was thinking of The Boss - of course it wasn't the 3 beers I just had ...  Nuts

There was a song called "In the Early Morning Rain," which has a line that goes: Out on runway number 9, big 707 set to go. When I sing it, I change it to "big DC-7 set to go." I think it was by Peter Paul and Mary, but I liked the Elvis Presley version better.

"By the seat of their pants"...

"Way up north the cold wind blows
Take a walk ya freeze your toes
and in the ocean only iceburgs can be seen,
ya need some food or gas or nails
your lonely can use some ale
your leg is broke, ya sure can use a nurse,
things may be bad without her may be worse,
shes an ambulance
shes a zoo
she is everything to you
shes a truckin our canoe,
shes a postal service too
and on top, of everything,
she flies."

(theme song from the movie 'By the seat of their pants')
What could possibly go wrong?

Everlast has a song that has an arrival announcement on a Pan Am flight:

Flight Attendant: On behalf of Pan Am Airlines, we'd like to be the first
to welcome you to New York City. We'd like to thank you for flying Pan Am.
The local time is 6:45AM and the temperature is 89°...

I've been up all night
On the redeye flight
The dawn's early light
Got the skyline bright....
America's chickens are coming home to rooooost!
