Check out your favourite urban legends/hoax site for the real story.
Surprised you haven't been spammed by that one years ago.

Actually it isn't an urban legend PerthGloryFan.

Hanoi Jane Fonda is a traitor and should have been shot when she got back off the boat.

Her alleged appolgy was a joke and has never been repeated by her and lack any semblence of sincerity. Needless to say it has been pretty much rejected by any american who has ever served in the US Forces.

You should be upset too Perth. She was spitting on the graves of Australians who fought there too when she did her little "USO Tour" of North Vietnam.

I suppose the fact that she was right and your government wrong is of no consequence.

I can't believe you blindly 'follow the flag' no matter what L-188.

You are correct of course. The US government was completely correct to support a corrupt RVN government in support of some crack-pot dominoe theory, to interfere in the internal affairs of another country for it's own purposes, to rig elections in that same country blah blah blah.

You and these geniuses you linked us to obviously have some chip on your shoulders over the whole affair and let it affect your good judgement (let's shoot her, good grief ???) but why not ask yourself who was really to blame for the whole mess, was it really Jane Fonda ? Ho Chi Minh ? Or maybe, just maybe, your own government ?

L-188, if you'd bothered to checkout the sites I posted you would seen that there is no dispute that you could consider Miss Jane to be a traitor to your cause, but the beatings and deaths of prisoners as a result of her passing to the NV supposed messages from prisoners is a complete fabrication. The colonel named in the story did survive and has stated that what is alleged did not occur.

And by the way, the purpose of US, and its compliant allies, in intervening in the former French Indo-China (and don't forget it was the French who wouldn't give up their empire after WWII that was a trigger for this) was to prevent the spread of communism through SE Asia.
And they were successful! Vietnam was the only country to succumb in the long term - this view was explained to me by a couple of Vietnam vets I work with. So, L-188, you were victorious after all!

But hey, don't let me drag you from your dark little world.

Instead, Jane came back to America and had an exceptional career of fame and riches.

Gosh. That must really get your BVDS into a wad !

Here's what snopes.com says about this:
During a 1972 trip to North Vietnam, Jane Fonda propagandized on behalf of the North Vietnamese government, declared that American POWs were being treated humanely and condemned U.S. soldiers as "war criminals" and later denounced them as liars for claiming they had been tortured.

and from urbanlegends.com:
Fact:

Jane Fonda visited North Vietnam in July 1972. Jane Fonda participated in a number of North Vietnam arranged propaganda events, including photo opportunities (most memorably posed with an anti-aircraft gun) and radio broadcasts. Jane Fonda participated in a North Vietnam press conference to refute charges that American prisoners were being mistreated by their captors. American prisoners were beaten for refusing to meet with Fonda.

Fiction:

Jerry Driscoll, an American POW, was beaten for spitting at Jane Fonda during her visit. When American POWs tried to messages to Fonda during her visit, Fonda turned the messages over to their North Vietnamese captors and the POWs were beaten and died.

Jane Fonda should have been put on trial for sedition.

"Instead, Jane came back to America and had an exceptional career of fame and riches."

Yeah we will always remember her Anti-Aricraft gun, her excercise "booty" videos, her absolutely profound performance in Barbarella (proves she's not only a traitor, but a talentless sexpot as well) and of course her sappy, overwrought supporting role in her senile father's On Golden Pond. So much for fame and having an impact on culture... Yeah sure

...Jane Fonda should have been put on trial for sedition...

There were several groups who explored that option, but found that it had no legal legs. Plus, remember that the war in Vietnam was very unpopular - putting Jane on trial would have created a public relations nightmare and accusations of Kangaroo Court tactics. It is interesting that Jane still inspires such venom, because she was clearly not the only American who actively opposed the war. I guess a trip to Hanoi by a larger than life American icon makes one a lightening rod.

As far as Jane being a lousy actress, ever seen her in Klute? She was pretty good, and even won an Oscar for it. Her booty videos may be laugheable now, but then aren't all those 80s icons from Reagan to Menudo to Dynasty laugheable today? (Oooops, sorry. Reagan remains an icon for the right).

But you'll be happy to know that Hanoi Jane has found refuge in the Baptist Church. You turn 65, your bootie sags, your husband (now ex-husband) isout scoring with women who were born after the fall of Saigon - whats a Fonda girl to do, but find some good ol Southern fried religion?

She may have been naive, even stupid to go to N.Vietnam.
But she didn't kill 2 millipn Vietnamese (at least half of them being civillans), drop napalm, Agent Orange or give a pardon to the officer in charge of the Mai-Lai massacre (Capt Calley).
A bit of perspective maybe?

Well, I have never held Jane's decision to go to Hanoi in any contempt. Stupid maybe. Naive, definitely. Perhaps, the misguided zeal of the American anti-war majority to end what was thought of as a corrupt war. All in all, it was a wretched war - I think we can all agree on that premise. Naive American soldiers receiving contradictory instructions by their equally naive commanding officers who were essentially pawns in a cold war strategy that misfired terribly. But even though tens of thousands of Vietnamese were killed by napalm, carpet bombing, or helicopter gunship strafing, it appears that the Viet Cong and the regime that fell into place after 1975 far exceeded the Americans in both intensity and ruthlessness.

Has anyone here read Stanley Karnow's "Vietnam?"

Irregardless of what everyone's opinions and beliefs of Jane Fonda & her actions, one fact of life remains...the day she's plugged in the ground, what the veterans & others will do to her grave won't pass for flowers. Guaranteed.

Klute? saw it certainly wasn't "Oscar" material but what would I expect from the NARAS...

Quite suprising to turn Baptists--who are certainly one ofthe more conservative sects...
