How Do You Get From Jersey To JFK On The Train?

Fri Dec 20, 2002 12:31 pm

Quick question to all you folks. How do you get from New Jersey to JFK on the train? I want to go to JFK for spotting but I don't wanna take my car. I know how to get into Manhattan with PATH or NJ Transit, but I am totally clueless after that. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Take the A subway train located at the west side of Penn Station. Make sure the train's destination is marked as Far Rockaway or Rockaway Park, not Lefferts Boulevard. Stay on the train until the Howard Beach station, about an hour from Penn Station at most times. Shuttle buses run from Howard Beach to the JFK terminals.

The Howard Beach station is actually located INSIDE the long term parking lot at JFK, so it may be quicker to walk over to one of the parking shuttles than to wait for the Howard Beach shuttle which is less frequent.

Total travel time should be ~25 mins from Newark to Penn and ~65 mins from Penn to Howard Beach, plus of course time waiting for trains and shuttles.

Thanks guys. I've lived here all my life, go to NYC at least once a week. This will be my first time on an actual NYC subway, never been on it. I take the PATH and usually just walk.

Sean,

The parking shuttles and Howard Beach shuttle are one in the same. Yellow and Blue port authority buses operated under contract by Hudson General. No one waits for them, they almost always have three or four sitting around the subway station waiting for riders. There are two routes that split up the 8 in use terminals.

You are kidding right? I have waited upto 45 minutes at Howard Beach for the buses in the past (most recently in March).

Wow, the airport must be really coming apart. I find that pretty shocking.

I worked for the PANYNJ in the summer of 2001 at the JFK operations office working in contract administration transportation and customer service and it was our job to monitor that Hudson General contract, among others, and Hudson did an excellent job. Yeah, I'm pretty shocked because there were pretty specific covenants in our agreement with Hudson that passengers shouldn't be waiting for more than about 7 to 8 minutes for about 20 hours of the day and for the other 4 that limit was extended to about 12 mins. We enforced the contract with our own people (76s) and CSR people from Allied/Spectaguard.

a great summer all in all, but thats troubling news. jfk had been coming along so nicely - i guess panynj priorities are elsewhere now (rebuilding path).

Those JFk shuttle buses are the pure essence of evil - usually late, always overcrowded, usually stinking of idiesel exhaust, and driven by lazy unionized dirtballs.
