London Airliners.net Meet Up?

Sun Dec 22, 2002 6:42 am

Well, my final dream as a bachelor is coming true.

I'm taking the Concorde to LHR on 10 Jan and returning on 12 Jan.

So it'll be my first time in London. I wanted to see if any of you want to meet up, hit a few pubs, cafes and hang out or even spot planes or trains.

I am definitely up for catching a local football game! Anyone interested?

Also, I will start looking for accommodations soon, but can any of you suggest a place to stay that is near all the action but is also easily accessible to LHR?

I will do my homework soon (get a Frommer's guide from our library and do some research) But I want to probe your heads for ideas as well.
I hear it can get cold there in January. Guess I should bring a scarf?

have a good weekend and a good holiday, mirrodie

Have a good time.
Whereever you stay, London is a very expensive place. Plan on spending 100+ pounds a night on a decent hotel unless you want to be far from the city center.

LHR can be reached my the tube in about 40-50 minutes from most tube stations.

London can get chilly in january, so bring a warm coat. Also bring an umbrella (or buy one locally, great souvenir if nothing else) as it can and will rain at the most unexpected times (if not constantly).

If you're interested in military aviation, you have to visit the RAF Museum at RAF Hendon (http://www.rafmuseum.co.uk/home.cfm for info and directions, tube station nearby).

Jwenting - Last time I went to London we stayed right in the centre and it only cost about £60 a night, plus it was a really nice hotel.

Mirrodie - I'd love to come, but unfortunetely its quite difficult for me to get to London so I don't know, it'd be cool to meet you and some of teh other guys, but I don't think so..

Cheers

I got a couple good hotel deals at discountcityhotels.com for London. The weekend might be a bit expensive though.

Check out "londontown.com" for very good hotel details. BTW, how did you swing a $10,000 Concorde RT ticket? I am DYING to find a BA Concorde deal for an upcoming trip to central Europe via LHR in late March. Have a great trip!
Maggs swings, it's a drive deep to left! The Tigers are going to the World Series!!!

Mirrodie,

Try http://www.6c.com which is the Holiday Inn, they've got some good deals for weekend breaks in January.

I'd love to meet up, but I'm flying to Paris for the weekend.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I will return to the UK around 5th-6th, then I have exams 8th and 9th and I will be in London from 9th to 12th!

If you are looking for cheap hotels you can check http://www.londontown.com . You can find some nice offers and maybe you can stay in a hotel near Paddington station where you can get service to LHR with Heathrow Express trains. Of course, chep rates mean very small rooms but this is not a problem for me usually since I only need the room to sleep and take a shower.

I'll be busy with exams during that week so I won't be able to meet anyone, but if runway 27L/R are being used at LHR you'll fly over my house in Croydon when you're on Concorde!

I won't be there, unless you plan to hop over to Schiphol for a day.
If you plan to do that, contact me and we should be able to work something out (especially if you plan to hop over during a weekend).

Are you flying back on Concorde too? Will you bring your passport so I can murder you and pu my photo in your passport and take your place like "Talented Mr Ripley"?  Acting devilish Be careful, other airliners.net members may be thinking the same things right now...

 Big grin

Ah well, have a good time. That weekend I'll be busily studying for the final exam of my life (for now), Engineering Applications of Fluid Dynamics... so no chance of me coming along (unless I can grab your Concorde tickets...  Acting devilish )

Shaun, I was in London 3 weeks ago (though not for aircraft spotting purposes).
I might be able to make it for time, but with my current financial situation that's the problem (I'm owed about €10000 backpay right now, company bankrupt, etc.).

If that situation is resolved and I can get time off from a new job (if I have one by then, which I hope I will) I might well come over.

Well, I found a decent deal in a part of London called Paddington. Is that close to the action?

From what I have read, there is a high speed train that connects from the LHR airport to Paddington.

Is Paddington a decent place to stay and is it near the action (In other words, is it easily accessible to the flavor that London has to offer?)

West Drayton is in west London, nowhere near central London and the attractions i'm afraid. But you're close to LHR should you decide to go spotting.  Big grin

West Dryden? Down the road from me. Near to LHR, there is a major aviation enthusiasts store there.
The place is 14 miles from central London.

OK, looks like Drayton is too far from the action.

How about Paddington?

Mirrodie:

Paddington is fine. It is in zone 1 and you can use the tube to go around london. You will also be close to Paddington station where you can catch Heathrow Express for a 15' ride to LHR that costs 23 pounds with return I think. Lets hope the weather will be good because I would like to visit LHR during my stay in London. Should I Email you my mobile phone number??

Paddington is a good location since it's in central London where you will be close to all the famous landmarks.

I used to live in West Drayton, and it's a bit of a dump to be honest.

However, you will get cheap accomodation, and it is a 10 minute bus ride on the U3 to LHR.........and only 70p.

West Drayton has a station where you can get a train to Paddington (Not bad service actually). Get a one day railcard and for about £7 you get unlimited use of trains, buses and underground.

Colnbrook is not bad, and its on the Bath Road, as is Heathrow.

Beware of Central London, as prices for everything tend to be sky high, and public transport is extremely un-reliable..........Oh and the Heathrow Express is a total rip-off.

I would suggest somewhere like Ealing or Richmond.........close to the City (Each with its own good nightlife), good access to LHR, and far enough out of the centre not to be extortionate.

Regards
