Happy Christmas Airliners.net!

Mon Dec 23, 2002 3:02 pm

Well, it's that time of year again - X-Mas (or X-Mess, whichever you want). I'd like to wish everyone a happy christmas and a lovely new year - even though we have our differences, let's put them aside this week and take a break from the fighting.

So, happy Christmas from me to everyone!

Now why would somebody take Christ out of Christmas and replace it with an X?
Whats behind this?

K,

It's how it is abbreviated here.

Merry x-mas Ash, and I hope you have a harpy new year!

From the Second College Edition of the American Heritage Dictionary:

"X, the Greek letter chi, abbreviation of Khristos, Christ"

It's humorous to me to see religious folk get bent out of shape when they don't even know what they're talking about. "Xmas" isn't taking "Christ" out of anything. The abbreviation has been used for hundreds of years. It still literally means "Christ-mas." Just like your little fish symbols you have on the back of your cars mean "Christ".

TWFirst .. I wonder if the X is an abbreviation of the fish ??? or the fish an extension of the X ?

Interesting ... hadn't thought of that before.

Spare a thought for your mothers people as Christmas probably is another day of work for her! Cooking, serving, showing surprise at the prezzies that Santa leaves!

As I recall, the fish symbol is a derivative of a combination of early Greek symbols for Christ, which included the letter chi (X) .

Ahem, no one else seemed to catch this...MERRY Christmas all! I hope to get a digital camera soon. 3.2 megapixels minimum. I wonder if it will be good enough to make pics for a.net. That Cannon EOS Rebel 2000 is bulky and belongs to my very protective dad (of the camera, not me hehehehe).

I can be Tom, but I thought your reaction to Goodbyes post warranted response. He was trying to be nice and in the spirit of christmas a nice response would have been warranted.

Merry X-Mass (or christmas) to all ....
