Does Your Car Have A Personality?

Mon Dec 30, 2002 1:42 pm

I have a 2000 Honda Accord EX V-6 that is the most cooperative, willing car I've ever driven. I've put 654 miles on it in the last 36 hours and it never complained, never once acted like it wasn't ready for more. If I want to really scoot, it eagerly goes for it. At 90 mph, it hits a stride so smooth that you swear you're floating. It gets angry when passed and demands action. And this afternoon, I swear it slowed on its own because the highway patrol was hiding just ahead. This car is one of the best friends I've ever had.

My current car does: IT'S BORING! (95 Camry 4-cylinder/automatic)

But my old car...ah, a 1985 Toyota Cressida station wagon. Car was barely a year younger than I was, but she was my baby. Always took care of me, never lost a wheel or slung a piston through the hood or anything major. Would willingly run up to about 105 (yes I was certifiably nuts). The headlights penetrated a long way into the distance, warning me of potential danger. The RWD and responsive steering made for a great driving experience. The 2.8 inline-Six that supposedly only got 156 HP pulled strongly all the way to redline (6,500 RPM), and the transmission with the ECT set to PWR delighted in crisp, quick shifts. She wound her way through mud and over ice and never once left me stranded.

She coddled me in her sport seats, and played the birthday song for all of my friends on their birthdays (I kid you not. The car could store 3 birthdays, and would even warn you of the birthday the day before. One the day of the birthday, every time you started the car the screen would flash the person's initials and the birthday song would play. It never failed to impress the people I showed it to). The controls were all firm and well built, in fact the whole car felt like it was made to run forever.

I couldn't have asked for a more willing car to endure the first two years of a teenaged boy's driving.

My cars name is Timothy

He always gets me through the rain, traffic and heat with never a shake.

He prefers bathes in the sun, and wax makes him shine with glee.

You know when something rattles, what needs attention, and when he wants to go fast or stop quick.

what a guy, he is quite a friend.

I don't have a car, but my friend does. She's big, Swedish and incredibly difficult to turn on  Big thumbs up (the car).

My car does have a personality - pretty cooperative and agreeable, with a bit of an edge when I push it hard.

I think a manual transmission totally transforms the characteristics of some cars...that was definitely true with my Honda Accord EX coupe, which I had before my current vehicle, a 2001 Toyota RAV4. I'd driven the automatic versions of both, and found them quite uninteresting and sluggish. Not so with a 5-speed.

The RAV may not jump away from a stop, but it certainly accelerates quickly and has the extra power when I need it. It doesn't mind cold days as much as the Accord, but still cranks a little slower. It also doesn't mind sudden manoevres and responds well to control inputs. I think the fact that I keep it clean and well-maintained affects the RAV's performance and "agreeable" characteristics, if you will.  Smile

My car has a nickname but no personality;
It's a Renault Clio and me and the lady of the house call it clitoris...

Sleekjet- I swear, Hondas have got to be the sturdiest cars ever made. Excellent gas mileage too, even in our titanic Oddessy.

1999 Honda Oddessy- Got it at the end of '99, put 67,000 miles on it so far (not joking), mom treats the fuel injector like a Corvette, and the whole thing like a truck. Never broken down, always reliable, a hell of a lot of power behind that engine, and gives us great attitude on the frequent 7 hour drive to San Diego, and just as well on the recent 11 hour drive to San Fran.
