Grade Of Window Tint - Please Explain.

Mon Dec 30, 2002 6:48 pm

Hello!

I have never bought window tint before, but I need some.

I want really dark quality window tint for my BMW 528.
How does the grade work? I can buy 35% 20% 5% or 1%, is 1% the darkest? And whats the legal limit? I don't want to cops busting me on every corner either.

Thanks!

Actually I think it is the other way around.

The percentage is the amount of light that is blocked. So 1% would be the lightest shade.

I don't know the legal limits up here, but there are limits. I want to say they have been in place for a bout 10 years now.

Opps, I was wrong about the tint.

I don't know what type of look you are going for.

My cousin had factory tinted windows on his old Chevy Nova. He could never paint the car from the factory Bronze to something else because they windows where tinted the same color!!!

Like I said you might want to be careful on the tints. There are some rules in this state.

Actually, I believe those percentages are the other way around.

35% - lets 35% of the light in your car
15% - lets 15% of the light in your car, etc.

If you want to be safe, ask your local law enforcement agency, which degree of tint is DARK AS LEGAL, and they'll tell you.

I don't know about other places, but here in CA, to my knowledge, you can tint window as dark as you like provided that 1) you don't put tint on either front drivers or passengers side window and 2) you don't tint the windshield.

Matt writes with wisdom.

Peace officers with whom I am acquainted tell me that, if the front door windows are tinted darkly enough to impede ready vision of the driver and passenger, they are much more likely to require the occupants to step from the vehicle in a "hands-up" controlled scenario.

The driver of a car is not supposed to be concealed from the outside, regardless of of "style."
