Sad Photo Tells A Too Common Tale

A mangled motorcycle carrying a brand spankin new registration tag.

I think of all the times I've every seen a crotch-rocket and how many of those times its' rider was actually at or near the posted speed limit.....the answer is "not a lot".

I'm still having a little trouble with the question of Why We Allow the sale of motorcyles that can do a hundred & forty without breakin a sweat, why we don't have tougher laws to deal with the punks who turn our highways into their own personal video game.

When I was in college, I held a part-time job at a mortuary (nothing weird, just washing limos, delivering flowers, acting as an usher). I didn't see many twenty-something men in caskets, but when I did, they were invariably victims of motorcycle accidents.

I think motorcyles are fun and sexy, but I have to tell you that I haven't ridden one since my funeral home days.

I had one for 4 years and while I have my motorcycle license and have taken advanced riding courses I consider myself lucky. I never got into an accident but there were times where I found myself on a back country road with no cars doing 160mph. Why you ask? I think simply because the power was there and the feeling was amazing. I will say one thing about bikes, I think there needs to be strict regulations about who these dealerships sell bikes to. You don't even need a motorcycle license to buy a bike just go in and pick one up. I can't tell you how many times I would ride up to my dealership and outside the shop were brand new bikes smashed up by riders who didn't know how to ride. Since then I've grown out of my rice rocket stage.

Regards
Tom

Even though I'm not a big fan of motorcycles and would be deathly afraid to drive one, especially seeing how the drivers here in SoCal are, I think that anyone that wants to should be allowed to. If they decide to get a bug up their ass and weave in and out of traffic and do 160 when everyone else is doing 75, and they end up getting scraped up with a spatula or shovel and acid, that should be their right as well. In the same vein, I would also say that I am opposed to mandatory helmet laws.

A real simple solution to your dilemma would be to change the laws a little that says 1) anyone that purchases a motorcycle must sign an affadavit that says they will not be eligible for medical aid at Highway Patrol/Taxpayer expense should they become road pizza and 2) if you are involved in a motorcycle accident, you are at fault, by default, automatically, no questions asked. You will be charged and convicted without a trial. "Due Process" was aready served when you made that decision and signed away your life.

THAT will change a lot of peoples behavior.

You want to live dangerously? Fine. That's your business. But there will be no one to help you if you lose that game. The sole purpose of a medical response to your road rash will be to move you out of the way of traffic and leave you in the bushes. You can get yourself out.

Sound cruel and inhumane? Yeah, it probably is. Next time, don't drive like an idiot. Either blend in with traffic, or find some abandoned rural road. If you drive like you have a death wish, you just might get that wish.

My brother-in-law had a motorcycle accident while in college. Apparently it happened during a test drive. He was too busted up to buy the machine, and by the time he got out of the hospital, he had enough sense to give up the idea.

Happy New Year from Dixie!!

Here's the graphic story of the day.

Heavymetal, you may have heard of this one. Back in mid October I flew an organ transplant team from the University of Florida to West Palm Beach to retrieve a heart from a donor. The donor was a 25 year old kid who hit a concrete bridge pillar on Okeechobee Blvd. with his motorcycle doing about 120. Someone cut him off and he was gonna get back at them. He got back at them alright.

They opened him up in the O.R., took a look and said thanks but no thanks and closed him right back up. They said he had brain matter coming out of his mouth.

Sorry for the graphics, but that's what these things will do to you if you're an idiot on them.
Heed our warnings or your future will be underpant free!

I'm scared to death of them - I rode on the back of my friend's Suzuki Hayabusa deathtrap at ludicrous speeds and it was absolutely terrifying (and I own and drive a Nissan Skyline which feels like an underpowered Renault by comparison!) Yikes!
I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

When I tried that link, all I saw was some kid dancing and some guys playing fiddles. It didn't scare me (much).
