Photography Besides Aviation

Tue Dec 17, 2002 9:34 am

All you aviation photographers out there. Do any of you do any other kind of photography such as portraits, macros (close-ups of objects), nature, city, or other modes of transportation?

If so, lets see some examples.

I hope Johan doesn't mind this post. This post is simply aimed to get to know each other and what other kinds of photography we are interested.

Here is one of my examples taken on Lake Leman in Switzerland:

Sorry if the photo has a lot of compression on it, the free webhost I use compresses the images.

For those of you who are curious, I am a film photographer and have not went with the digital craze. Call me old fashion, call me wierd, whatever. I'm still very happy with film photography and have been getting excelent results.

I use a Pentax ZX-7 QD SLR body with 2 lenses, a 28-80MM and a 80-320MM. I think this shot was taken with my 28-80, but I'm not 100% sure. I tend to forget since I'm always switching lenses. I use a Minolta Dimage Scan Dual II film scanner using VueScan and do final touchups and enhancements in Paint Shop Pro 7 using Unsharp Mask. This was taken with Fuji Sensia 100 slide film which is a very affordable slide film and produces good results as you can see from this photo. I also shoot K64. Hopefully I'll give Provia 100F a shot one day.

For full photography equipment details, check out my profile.

I'll upload some more photos later.

Lets see those photos!

I'm into road photography whenever I have money for film.

You're gonna flame me for photographing while driving I know, but oh well...its all about tight apertures, 50mm lenses, and focusing on infinity

Oh yeah...check out massplate.jpg...definitely holds true for 495 anyway  Big grin

Ahh, different modes of transportation! Try http://www.photo.net/photodb/presentation.tcl?presentation_id=152876
for some railroad photography at my favorite location, or go here:http://www.sover.net/~tomh for more diversified stuff, but still pretty much transportation oriented.

Airliners.net photos here: http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?photographersearch=Shawn%20Damphousse&distinct_entry=true

In fact, aviation photography is an incredibly small proportion of my picture-taking. I apply myself to a variety of different photography styles, but the one I enjoy most is portraiture. I'd say I'm pretty good at it as well, but if I had the right equipment, I could do much better work. Oh well. I think I do need a new model though! Big grin

Small photos to protect privacy somewhat.

Thanks BA, yes I use film, the ones on my link are all Sensia 100, shot with a Minolta Maxxum 7000 and scanned on a Minolta Scan Dual II scanner.

I guess you and I made our respective posts simultaneously. I love those Holden dragsters shots.

Sunil,

Very nice shots of the radio telescope (I assume this was a radio telescope). You India shots are top rate as well.

Shawn,

Luv you sense of humour.

Thomas, the antenna is actually a communications antenna for NOAA’s polar orbiting weather satellites. You can’t really get a scale from the photo, but the antenna was massive… and it could move horizon-to-horizon in under a minute!

Hi guys - yeah I do a lot of non-av stuff ... mostly nature and people, esp. kids - my Xmas project is to sort out my online "portfolio", so I'll get back to you with a link ... unfortunately, I can't use some of my favorite shots 'cause of the enormous sensitivity (in the UK at least) to pics of kids on the 'net.

But if you want to see the kind of thing that pays for my equipment, have a look at

this site

as the society have decided to put the proofs of a shoot I did for them online. My personal favorite of that shoot is

Guys, this is a interesting thread. I spend a few hours each week taking photos of non aviation subjects. I take around 20-50 shots on average per week of things around the city, family, smash etc

I use the Sony F707 and because digital is really free practice I keep taking and taking photos, sometimes not knowing when to stop. My fascination with Digital has led to my girlfriend wanting to take photos digitally. Of course yours truly paid for the S85 for her to play with. And to top it off she(who also works at the airport) is getting addicted to A.net and she wants to go out and take photos of planes...... Strange girl.

Good thread as it gives us the opportunity to share some of our non-aviation photography. I enjoy many facets of photography but gravitate to a few special forms ... they are:

Nature and wildlife ...

Underwater

Landscapes ...

I'm sure all of us who responded to this thread could go on for hours, if not days, showing photographs we've taken over the years. But this isn't the place for that. To see more of my photographs please visit my website ...
