Can someoe explain to me how it's possible to 'collide' with a Oil tanker the size of a 10-storey building in the vast open spaces of the English channel?  Confused

Quite easily: That's Murphy's Law. At the beginning of the 20th century there were only 2 motorcars in the whole state of Alabama...they collided!

The reason they hit it was probably because there was no one on the bridge and the ship was on autopilot. If there was someone, I expect he was unqualified and was desperately searching for someone to get them out of trouble. It was well signposted after all and one of the buoys even alerts the ship's radar so no real excuse.

Probably all down to cutting costs and using cheap labour.

What kind of cars was the Tricolor carrying? Lemme guess...3,000 new Mercedes sedans!?

Mainly BMW's, Volvos and Saabs.

Bearing in mind the typical profile of the owners of these types of car (in the UK, anyway) it is hard to get too upset about them losing their pride and joy in the English Channel! Big grin

Actually I did a Google search, the ship carried 2900 BMWs, Volvos & Saabs....the big financial tragedy is they cheaped out on the insurance policy and each car was only covered to $24,000 US! ...far short of their actual value!....

It looks like they're all piled on top of one another now. Ooops!

Actually, Heavymetal, that's raises an interesting question. They might have been under-insured versus their sale value, but they may have been insured for the cost of replacement - i.e. what it costs them to build. Have you just stumbled on the profit margin per car...?

Either way, don't we all feel really sorry for those modest people at BMW?  Big grin

A member of the UK coastguard interviewed should take up acting, he did so well hiding his exasperation!
The wreck is surrounded by buoys, one a transmitter, a French Navy patrol boat hailed the latest vessel and the coastguard transmits warnings at least twice an hour.
Funny how nearly every ship that has an accident is a 'flag of convenience' one, with crews picked for cheapness.

Would it be so hard to erect a beacon on top of the sunken Tricolore??? Seems like a pretty simple solution to me...

EGGD,

That's the point! The French have put about half a dozen buoys around the wreck, including a radar transponder beacon. Automated warnings are sent out every couple of minutes on the marine version of ATIS (whatever that is called). Not to mention all the publicity that the Tricolor's sinking caused only 3 weeks ago. Clearly, the crew of the Turkish ship was incredibly stupid and ignorant, and should have their licenses revoked.

You should rephrase that. The oil tanker hit the sunken TriColor, which is resting on its side, and in low tide, is quite visible. But still, you're point is true...how the hell to you hit a big orange flat thing in a vast blue sea!? Especially with all the beacons and warnings.

While the collisions are inexcusable, the channel is not so vast, not much more than 20 miles wide at one point? It's also the busiest shipping lane in the world.

Nevertheless...you still have 20 miles to play with. And with beacons and such, indeed, the collisions are inexcusable. I also noticed your comment on "Flag of Convenience" ships, and I have to agree with you on that. We need to prevent operators of ships to circumvent laws in such manners.

I bet, with the channel being so busy that many ships try and take a 'short cut' by taking a direct path towards the sunken ship, but as they are stupidly french end up hitting it  Laugh out loud

Not excusing anyone, but despite 20 miles of open space, they still have specific shipping lanes they have to follow, no? Its not like they can use any of the 20 miles. Granted they missed all of the warnings, beacons, etc, etc. and should be held accountable, but it not as much of a coincidence as it sounds....or am I wrong?
