Computer Problem - Please Help!

Sat Jan 04, 2003 4:57 am

My computer is driving me crazy. I have a P2 400Mhz, 326Mb RAM and a 10Mb HD. It worked well until recently. Lately, it kept shutting down one or more active browsers on its own. Or simply shuts windows and reboots by itself in front of my eyes. I formatted and re-installed windows XP but not without difficulty. It crashed 4 or 5 times in the process. Today I tried a different HD. During installation it crashed again with a blue screen showing a different page long fault (which I could not understand) every time. At one time the end line said it was erasing some memory ! Now I succeeded in installing windows and is working OK. But I still think it is only a matter of time till it crashes again.

What do you think is the problem?

Simple solution.
Get a Mac  Laugh out loud
I did that last October and it did take me long to get DataStream to change my ADSL modem, but since then it's worked flawlessly. Nowadays I do all my surfing, typing and music listening on the Mac. And it doesn't crash!

check your fan on your processor, make sure it is spinning as this is quite often a simple problem that appears to be serious. When the processor gets to a certain temp, it will shut down

Someone told me it could be a serious hard disk malfunction. Others simply that the ram might not be securely positioned. I don't know a thing about hardware. The last thing I want to do is take it to some computer shop who will charge me a bundle for a petty job. So I will appreciate your opinion. Is it a RAM problem you are thinking 747-145?

Id say its a heat problem. P2-400s put out a good amount, and the cooling fans that they have are not up to the same level of cooling ability of the new fans/heatsinks.

You dont have 326mb ram in your system. its just not possible with the sizes that pc100 sdram modules come in. Id say you have 320mb ram (256mb+64mb). But if your system IS reporting 326, thats your problem, and you have some faulty ram. Go to Crucial.com and buy some CAS2 PC100 ram from them

Since you have multiple sticks of sdram, in addition to the p2, Id suggest putting as many cooling fans into your system as you can. There should be a mount in the front of the case, and at least one in the back of the case. When I had a p2, I also bought a fan made my Antec that fit right into one of my open expansion slots in the case. I set it up so that it was facing my graphics card, and that helped system stability a lot.
Excuse me, but what does God need with a starship?
