Starting A Company, Tips?

Sun Jan 05, 2003 6:44 am

I'm starting a company pretty soon, it's going to be like British Airways, just bigger. No, just kidding, it has nothing to do with airplanes.

Does anyone have any tips? What kind of outside help did you have, a CPA, a lawyer?

Awesome! What kind of business though?
Sometimes I go about in pity for myself and all the while a great wind carries me across the sky.

Yeah, what business....it might help to tell ppl what type of business your starting...that way they'll have better insight on what help you need.

P.S. I'll be your CEO.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

There are many things that are important, some of the main ones are:

Be competitive

Don't promise what you can't deliver

Treat Customers as you want to be treated

When conflicts come up, try to look at the big picture as bad news spreads a lot faster than good

Treat your employees like they are your hero's

Be fair

Power can often be misused, sometimes try to let your logic make decisions, and not your ego.

Always have good eye contact with your customers and employees

Try to enjoy what you are doing, it is always best to have a business in a field that you actually like.

Do not let your employees have access to airliners.net

good luck

Jeremy

It's nothing fancy, just some stuff in real estate or grocery store.

Best advice you'll get on this board: Don't come here for advice! People you should be talking to-

Tax attorneys, accountants, customers, business lawyers, banks, loan officers, clients, competitors, other business owners, and potential customers.

Not anonymous 16 year olds who hang out on the internet all day (no offense, there are some knowlageable people out here, but if I wanted to get information about something I had little experience in, this is one of the last places I'd come; too hard to seperate the wheat from the chaff.)

Best advice (apart from going to pros and not coming here):
DON'T do it right now. Wait until the economy settles down, things are far too unstable to give you any realistic chance of success.

Another good piece of advice: start small and expand slowly and cautiously.
Most companies that fail fail because they expand too quickly (or because they didn't have a market at all and should never have started in the first place).

Also, if you are going into partnership with someone, no matter how well you get on now you WILL end up suing/being sued by them if the business goes well. A lot of people turn real nasty when the lure of even more $$$ (instead of a 50-50 split) manifests itself.

Also, never EVER be complacent and think your product is the best out there. Remember, what we invent at breakfast somebody else has copied by lunch and has bettered by dinner. Never ever stand still.

Thanks for the tips everyone.

I know it will be hard work but I think I can do it.

I better not have access to a.net, because I'll spend more time here than trying to run the business.
