Bond, James Bond!

Fri Jan 10, 2003 7:34 pm

So, what are your thoughts on the newest addition to the line of Bond films? I know it hasn't been shown everywhere yet, but for those who've seen it, what did you think?

Has Ian Flemings character become dryer than a martini after they stopped basing the movies on the novels? Are the special effects and the funny lines enough? Is this perhaps one of the best Bond films ever?

opinions, opinions please.

I think that Die Another Day was an OK movie, but what ruined it, and IMO, left a scar on the series, is the fact that Bond became a POW. Not just for 20 minutes, or a day or two, but for 14 months! That part sucked & I wonder if Fleming (while he didn't write the more recent books) ever intended it to be that way, or if he was "spinning in his grave" after that was shown. I kinda think him being locked up took away from the concept that Bond is/was untouchable & might take away from the fun of future movies...

The special effects are OK, and the one-liners are still going strong.

I think it was an interesting leap from the other movies. I loved most of the plotline, the action, the humor, and the cars and that Antonov jet! I got tickets to the prescreening, so that was nice. Plus Hally Berry was so hot I'm surprised when she got out of the water she wasn't steaming. However, like DeltaRules mentioned, the POW thing did derail the feeling to the rest of the movie.

Didn't care for it at all. Give me From Russia With Love, or Doctor No anyday over that. Bond is supposed to be a Secret Agent right? Not some special forces commando. I think they took it just too far; the orgininal movies had characters, and plot, and dialog. This one seemed that the writers looked at the plot as a neccisary device to get from one over the top special effect sequence or product placement to the next.

Oh, and that whole Bond being a POW thing.

I can't help but notice the whole POW thing. Sadly that three letter word is completely new to me. Could anyone update me on what it is?  Smile

Thanks for your oppinions.

What a crap movie was that. One of bond new toys was an invisible car! I mean keep it a little serious please. And a ferrari which falls off an airplane at 3 km height and doesn't have a scratch on it. And so on. I would say this is the worst bond movie I have ever seen. Nothing is left from the original bond-style. This could be just another actionmovie

Here are some comments I made in previous threads:

This was one of the best Bonds ever. It´s in the top three along with Goldfinger and Licence to Kill.

Its main strong points:

- a coherent simple story, yet a lot at stake

- nice locations (especially the ice hotel, but Los Órganos was cool too)

- finally a good villain: a complete madman aspiring for control of the world; bad to the bone unlike e.g. 006 (Goldeneye) or Renard (TWINE) who were in a way victims themselves

- In a move away from the superficial generic superhero, Bond is portrayed as a human being with nuances, facets and, yes, weeknesses

- hilarious one-liners, yet not so much in your face but subtle

- creativity: fencing, surfboards, hovercrafts, Moneypenny in the end

- gadgets are state of the art (or more), and not the 150th watch or 232nd wonder weapon

- as a longtime fan, I loved all the quotes from past movies: Goldfinger, FRWL, YOLT, DAF, LTK + Roger Moore´s daughter starring - that´s what I recognised so far

- the car: it had a role (unlike the BMW in Goldeneye, who featured just for product placement reasons) and it was finally appropriate (unlike the BMW in TND which is mass market, every idiot here in Germany drives one) for a man of distinction like 007.

- Halle Berry: more than a simple sidekick introduced to look good and appeal to black audiences. Her acting as a blunt American agent contrasts very nicely with and hence underscores the Briton´s suave and completely different approach to his work.

- The whole movie´s style, including especially Madonna´s theme song, is very modern, even by today´s standards. It´s downright avantgarde; not everyone may like it, but that´s a venerable tradition in the 007 series which sees a comeback after the past three blunders.

- the twists and turns which make it all quite unpredictable and fun to guess what´s really happening

All in all, finally a James Bond movie which deserves that title - after 13 years, James Bond HAS returned.

Incidentally, a few days ago I thought about my personal ranking of 007 movies. Here it is, if anyone cares:

GOOD
1. Goldfinger
2. Licence To Kill
3. Die Another Day
4. The Living Daylights
5. Moonraker
6. On Her Majesty´s Secret Service

10. For Your Eyes Only

BAD
16. Tomorrow Never Dies

I thought the movie was okay. I think they have started trying to hard with the effects. The invisible car was a little too much. However, the car chase scenes on the ice were awesome.

Die Another Day was the worst Bond movie Ive ever seen...I hated it (despite the aviation scenes lol)...way too sci-fi for me (the invisible car, the special medical technology and the electric suit were way too much)...plus the An-124 with the glazed nose...bad...not to mention that the plot is ironic given the current situation on the Korean Peninsula...
