I'm not sure about that GDB. Most people I've spoken to appear to have formed the opinion (which could be changed by events) that Townshend has merely been unbelievably stupid, not evil. The mob mentality may not have a chance to take hold.
It is interesting that so many of his friends have come out saying that it is out of the question that he is a paedophile, and these people know him better than any of the public. The truth is that if Townshend's motives were less than pure, then you really can trust no-one. He's spent so long attacking internet paedophilia that he must be the best actor in history if he isn't innocent.
More than that, one of the police officers with whom he's been working on anti-child porn campaigns has already come out as a character witness to all intents and purposes. He's also freely offered up his computer to the police for checking, and has agreed for them to come and search his house - which is happening right now.
I don't know. Part of me may be engaging in wishful thinking, but everything he's said and done so far suggests he's merely been misguided, and those who run the campaigns seem to have the same opinion, strongly criticising him for idiocy but hinting that they do not believe him guilty of anything worse. Apparently, he was in touch with the police prior to logging on to the sites in question (although he didn't tell them what he was going to do) and also asked a lawyer friend for advice about it some months ago. None of this is the behaviour of a guilty man, unless he's acquired a talent for deviousness which has been anything but apparent over the last forty years.
He may still be charged. But unless the police find evidence of rather more wrongdoing than we know about so far, I somewhat doubt it. A caution may be a possibility.
And IMissPiedmont, why do you think this is a joke? It is very, very serious. This story is not some sick wind-up.
She's as nervous as a very small nun at a penguin shoot.
