Good Maldives Hotels?

Sat Jan 18, 2003 11:16 am

I am thinking about going to the Maldives with my wife this April and was wondering whether anyone had any personal experience with any of the hotels with regards to price, service, distance from airport, etc.. I was looking at the beach huts and water bungalows which look really nice but a little pricey however that's the attraction of the Maldives. If I am going to stay in a normal hotel I might as well go to Phuket!

It's hard to tell what is nice and what isn't simply from a hotel website, so any of your personal opinions/experiences will be appreciated!

Hi Cx flyboy

check out www.tajhotels.com

They have two hotels in Male and are pretty good and exotic. Taj Hotels is a hotel based in India but has hotels around the world.

I went a couple of years ago, and stayed on Paradise Island for 10 days in a beachfront villa. It was very nice. We stayed on a full board basis, and only paid for drinks at the end of our stay. It was about 20 minutes by boat from the airport. The price was very reasonable. As for service, if you go for full board, you sit at the same table during your stay, and have the same waiter (drinks etc as the food is buffet style). Ours (Farook) was very friendly.

If you can, try and get a villa round the side that has the overwater bungalows, and the water is calmer and has better coral. Don't go for one of the overwater bungalows as they can get very warm inside from the sun reflecting off the water.

Also, you can't take alcohol into the Madlives, even if its duty free, you have to leave it at the airport and collecxt it on your return. You can buy it there though, although its a little expensive.

hi
I had an very good experience on the island Velassaru, about 30min from the airport. But I must say this was almost 10 years ago, so it might have changed.
The hotel had only bungalows directy at the beach. It was a wonderful place for diving and snorkling (not so good for swimming). All in all 4 restaurants and the rooms were wonderful...but obviously it was quite expensive.
Anywayz, the water quality for the shower was very good, really not salty at all. But some friends of mine had bad experience with salty water at other hotels. So check the water quality, it's important if you ask me.

Thanks. I will have a look at the hotels. The tajhotels one looks very very nice, but waay too expensive. Thing is, there are a lot of resorts around Asia where I can get a similar experience to the Maldives. Of course they may not live up to those standards, but the price is a lot cheaper. I guess for someone from Europe, the Maldives offers that something special away from the druken louts at Torremolinos, but living in Asia, I have many resorts available to me. It's just the Maldives is quite nice romantic and exotic.

If I am paying 3x the cost, of a holiday in a top Phuket or Bali resort, I light as well stay here.....but keep the recommendations coming! thanks again!

Stayed once at Kanuhura Island (Resort) which is a very nice place but not cheap at all. Flew there with a Maldivian Air Taxi DHT each way 45min.

These hotels certainly do look fantastic. The cheapest flight I can get to the Maldives is about US$650. The rooms cost $250-500 a night. So $4000 later and some hotels charge for the airtaxi, which alone costs more than a round trip ticket to many places in Asia on decent airlines! I guess living on a resort means you have to eat and drink at their prices as well. On a holiday like that you can't really look at the price otherwise you wouldn't enjoy yourself. Go on a few activities like water-skiing and diving and you are probably looking at at least $5000 for a 5 day trip. That's obscene.

I think I'll go to Phuket or Langkawi. For $5000 I could live like a king! Thanks anyway all!

You might be right. If you really want to go to the Maldives you could try to find a package tour organised by a Travel Agent with flight, transfer and room (half- or full-board). You should fly on SriLankan Airlines  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

The Hilton Rangali was excellent, 30mins by seaplane from Male.
