Anyone Here Had Lasik?

Sun Jan 19, 2003 6:37 am

If so, please answer these questions:

1. How much did it cost?

2. Are you pleased with the results?

3. Would you do it over if given the chance?

It seems like I can't just answer your question without a silly default message telling me my answer is too short and "not of high enough value", whatever that is supposed to mean....gawd, sometimes I hate this site.....

I personally have not had it but know many people who do. I have 2 pieces of advice:

1) Do not cheap out and get just any doctor advertising the best price. When it comes to your eyes, you get what you pay for.

2) When they do your original screening, if they tell you that you are not an ideal candidate, then DON'T DO IT.

Of all the people I know who had problems, they disobeyed one of the 2 rules. Everyone else I know has loved the procedure and recommends it highly.

Luckily, I don't need it!

My mother has. She has two cousins (brothers), who are both opthamologists (and who's father started their practice as an opthamologist himself). Matt, one of her cousins, recommended a doctor in Memphis, while Matt did the pre-op and post-op (they practice in Tupelo, and that's a lot closer than Memphis). Mom had it done, for about $2500 (I'm relying on memory here, I think that was the approx. price) on just her left eye. I do know that the doctor does a lot of LASIK operations a year, how many I don't quite remember. 500 maybe? Afterwards, both Tom and Matt said that the doctor had done an absolutely flawless operation. I know my mother was not the perfect candidate for LASIK because she had astigmatism, yet she had a perfect operation. The only tricky part was that she had to keep a special contact on her eye for a few days afterwards and keep it lubricated, so that the corneal flap wouldn't move while it was healing.

Because of her astigmatism, Mom (who was 52 when she had LASIK performed, she's 53 now) wore gas permeable contacts until several years ago when she developed an infection in her eye. She couldn't wear her left contact without pain. In fact, the last time she flew with both contacts in (required by her medical), it caused her severe pain that lasted several hours after the flight). But I know she's extremely pleased with the operation. She would've had it done to both eyes if she'd had the extra money, but two kids in college can find many ways to spend $2,500.  Big grin

If you'd like, I can e-mail Matt's current office (he has since amicably split from his brother and opened a new, larger office) name and number. The doctor in Memphis who performed the operation is the best in Memphis, Matt said, and if you'd be willing to come this far to have the operation done, it would be worth your while.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that you shouldn't have LASIK done when you are young. Not sure of the exact age cutoff but they shouldn't mess with your eyes until they have fully matured. If you are a younger guy that want's to do LASIK and the doc says you aren't old enough....listen to him. I would hope that there aren't docs around who would do the procedure one someone too young just to make a buck....

D727, I think since I'm 54, the eyes have probably matured. My concern is probably the same as everyone who has had the operation. If there is a room of 100 patients getting ready to have the procedure, statistics say that one of them will have severe problems because of the Lasik. I just don't want to be the one. However, I will consider the surgery and get the very best to do it.

Check out the prices in South Africa. I looked into that and it was alot cheaper than it is in the UK. I could get both eyes done for about £100 more than one eye in the UK, and also get a nice holiday too.
