Detroit, MI & Toledo, OH What's There To Do?

Mon Jan 20, 2003 8:35 am

Anyone from Detroit/Toledo? I'm here until Tuesday, and I want something fun to do. I already went to the auto show. Any ideas?

Go gamble in Windsor, or go see the Wings pay at the Joe.

My friend goes to college there, it's really boring!

Well, I live not too far from DTW, but right now, it's really to cold to do anything outside.. Henry ford Museum, if you can drive then the Chrysler museum.. But for food- Definately visit Millers Bar in Dearborn.. On Michigna Ave.. The BEST burgers inthe world.  Smile

Email me if you want..

Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI.
Detroit-Wayne County Metropolitan Airport (park on the elephant ramp parking garage and spot from the top, if you can bear the cold)

Go to your local library and get Let's Go Guide to the USA and look up Detroit and Toledo. That's the college student's guide to cheap/free and well worthwhile.

Ah!

As a former resident of DTW, I have a lot of great suggestions. However, they are all for the summer. I hated the winters when I lived there -- they have skiing, but it's a complete insult if you are from out west, as I am. I'm used to having 4000 vertical feet at my disposal. The Michigan ski areas offer 100 vertical feet of former landfill. Great.

Other than that, there's not much to do in the winter time except freeze your a@$ off, and play indoor b-ball. But then again, there's a cool WWII aircraft museum at the Willow Run airport (KYIP), which is not far from KDTW. In fact, I used to live in Belleville, which is between KYIP and DTW.

While Detroit surely has plenty of things to do, why would you want to be anywhere near Toldeo Ohio? What, was the city dump closed, so you went to the next best thing...Toledo? There is only one good thing about Toledo, and thats seeing it in your rear view mirror of your car as you speed away from it! Hell, Toledo makes Cleveland look like Paris!

I was in Detroit this weekend and the bigass auto show was there. Might be interesting to check out, or, as already mentioned, hop across the river into Windsor and gamble.

If you make it down to TOL - there really isn't much left to do in the winter. The Museum of Art in the Old West End is open daily for free (would highly recommend it), the Zoo is open - admission is half off, and of course the various restaurants around town...TOL has the highest number of restaurants per capita out of all major cities (IOW - no one here cooks). If you like hockey...Toledo Storm downtown is always a good game - just watch out for the flying squid.  Smile

I will echo the remarks above...try the casinos in Windows and Detroit (MGM is the one I usually frequent). This area is really closed down til spring when all the outdoor attractions open back up (the Islands, Mud Hens, Cedar Point, etc.).

Not much to do in Detroit.. I live about 25 minutes west of the city down I-96. We dont have fun during the winter, for our fun, we leave here.. Go to places like Florida.

Michigan winter fun:

Eat (get fat)
Hibernate
rent a video
Eat
Sleep
rent a video
Eat
Shovel snow
hibernate
Eat
stare at the clouds
eat again
sleep more
rent another video
eat some more.
hibernate.

*repeat*.... what a boring life.

Go north to Frankenmuth or way north to Mackinac Island or....... yeah just get the hell away from Detroit. Oh wait, here's one. Go grab a nice warm cup of hot chocolate, sit down in a nice big chair, and tune into the amazing broadcasts aired on the Arab Voice of Detroit. Oh yeah now that's living.

Or go see if one of the many giant garbage mounds have iced over. Probably makes for some good tobogganing.
