Nasty Reminder For All Of Us

Thu Jan 23, 2003 7:08 am

I never thought I would write something like this but it hits home.

This is a link to a recent story on Long Island. It hits home b/c the woman that was killed is my brother's girlfriend's(Maria) mom as well as his best friend's(Jose)mother.

Since the start of the year, my brother has been through a lot. His 2 friends (brothers) were hit by a drunk driver and one brother killed and the other is still in ICU.
Then 2 days ago he went to his girlfriend's great grandmother's funeral.

Now this.

Don't you mean "don't drink and drive"?

My condolences. I've never yet lost someone near me due to a traffic accident, but it was close twice.

And indeed it can happen to anyone. Even if you're a perfect driver (and who is?), remember that there are a lot of idiots out there!

My uncle was a professional trucker. One day he got hit while driving his car (not his truck) on a narrow road by someone doing over twice the legal limit.
He's never been able to drive a truck again in his life, spent 25 years as a near invalid until he reached retirement age (now he's still not fully healed but he's now officially classed as retired and not invalid).

I was in ISP about 2 weeks ago, nice area.

BTW what is an O.D.? Is that optometry?

On Sunday a Junior at my school lost control of his car and crashed into a tree. Even though I didn't know him, it was still a very sad day at school today. His funeral is tomorrow.

Mirrodie, my deepest condolences. Last year, two girls in my school were going home on our (in)famous I-4 when they were run off the road and into a tree by a bad driver (who changed lanes without care) at 55 MPH. Thankfully, they were both seatbelted, the car had airbags (which operated properly) and OnStar (so help was dispatched immediately). Both were out for a week, and one still has whiplash problems...sobering indeed. The worst part is, they never found the b*stard that ran them off the road.

Just two days ago, after wind ensemble practice (which ends at 4:30 PM), Chris, our first chair clarinet, fell asleep on the way home. He's pretty lucky, though, because he only suffered several fracture vertebrae. No paralysis, amazingly, because his spinal cord wasn't touched. I worry about falling asleep at the wheel sometimes.

my condolences...

That thing about others putting oneself in danger reminds me of something that happened to me recently. I had taken my parents to the birthday party of one of their colleagues and was driving home on a narrow country road, at night. You are allowed to drive 100 km/h on that road, I was close to 90 and decelerating before entering a curve. Out of nowhere, a VW Multivan cought up with me and passed me at some 120 km/h. I got scared for a split second (which seems rather normal to me when you've been given your driving license two months before) and then had to alter course to avoid crashing into a ditch. After all, I think I should be grateful for my luck and that my father had gotten a new car one month before, which has a far better road holding than the previous one.

Regards, aloges
