Anyone Heard About This Aircraft Incident?

Tue Jan 28, 2003 2:29 pm

Last night I was listening to this man on Ham Radio (KG6RLP) and he was telling us that a while back this B747 had flown into an ash cloud from an erupting volcano and had its all 4 engines fail. The aircraft was flying at about 39000 feet (FL390) and plumeted until about 11000 or 9000 feet until they had finally restarted all engines. He also stated that the B747 suffered airframe damage from the extreme G-forces.

Had anyone heard about this story? By the way, he is an experienced private pilot and to ALL people that think private prop aircraft are unsafe, than you are all wrong. He told us that it is just CARELESSNESS!!. That some pilots wont even do a walk around. He also told this story about this one pilot that he went up airborne forgetting that he still had his aircraft's flaps locked up from a piece of nail. (He had the nail there to protect the flaps from moving around from the wind) But evidentally he forgot to take it out and just crashed after a few hundred feet from the ground and crashed on a tree. All people were killed in that crash.

Yes, this happened. It was a British Airways flight over Indonesia, from Java to Perth, during the eruption of Mt. Galunggung in 1982. Here are some links:

The first link includes information about fighters that encountered some of the same over Mt. Redoubt in Alaska.

I was wrong..but not by as much as you all are saying. It was:

DEC.14.1989 747-406 PH-BFC 23982 K L M Anchorage area/AK/USA all four engines failed when flying through ashcloud of Mount Redoubt; pilots managed to restart the engines at ~FL180

Apparently, there must be two such incidences.

The one that some of us are talking about occurred on June 24, 1992 to G-BDXH. There is an excellent account of it in Macarthur Job's Air Disaster Volume 2.

TWAL1011 I think you meant to say 1982 not '92. I don't recall G-BDXH suffering any structural damage to it's fuselage. It landed in Jakarta.

Could be...I never heard of the Jakarta incident...but I know first hand the KLM flight landed in Anchorage, with no forward visibility due to the sand blasted windshield and a couple of engines barely running. 231 souls on board. It is an amazing and terrifying tale.

G-BDXH is now with EAL, so any structural damage was rectified. PH-BFC was only 3 months old!

This did happen twice. First to the BA jet flying to Australia.

My pilot friend tells me that this happened to a KLM jet which forcelanded in Anchorage.
