Best Guitarists

Fri Jan 31, 2003 6:06 am

Who do you think are the best guitarists? My picks:

1. Jimi Hendrix - He did stuff with the guitar which was just unbelievable. His technique was off the charts, and he made sounds which one found hard to believe was coming from a guitar.

2. Santana - While he may not have the technical skills of many, his musicality on the guitar in my opinion is verrrry good. My favorite album is the one he did with John McLaughlin, the music is simply amazing.

My choices are generally due to innovation, tone, and overall writing ability rather than raw technique so I'll name my top 5, in no particular order

Robert Smith- The Cure. Just listen to the album 'Disintegration.'

Bob Mould- Sheer tonal quality and the perfect track-layering sensibility

Chet Atkins

Django Reinhardt

The Chameleons' team of Reg Smithies and Dave Fielding- Fielding's reverb-drenched strumming mated with Smithies' Chorused plucking created one of the most powerful sounds in Rock. A band that imploded on the threshold of stardom, reunited!

Bob Mould is a favorite of mine as well. A few more favorites:

Al DiMeola: technical genius
Trevor Rabin: former Yes member & on par with Al DiMeola

A few old school metal favorites:
Randy Rhoads: R.I.P.
Eddie Van Halen: what list would be complete without him?

I have more but I can't think of them now.

Joe Satriani - He has a host of his own solo albums which are really moody, and his work with DT is excellent.

Yngwie Malmsteen - My god he is fast  Wow!, amazing stuff..

Steve Vai - Much the same, he managed to make his guitar sound a whole choir he is so fast, most bands just get a real one  Laugh out loud.

Marty Friedman - Fast fast fast, some really really good stuff with Megadeth, even after the harcore 'Rust in piece', they still put out some great groove riffs in Countdown, Marty made it all happen Big grin.

George Lynch - Considering he was a member of a Hair metal band, he is such a great guitarist... 'Mr Scary' is so good, it reminds me of Hangar 18 by Megadeth.

Chris Impellitteri - This guy is amazing, i've never seen such amazing ripping music... ok maybe I have, but he is still great  Smile.

Some odd suggestions so far lol ...  Smile

Joe Satriani is just about untouchable in terms of pure technique. Quite lyrical as well. Thank God he stopped trying to sing!

Pete Townsend has always been tremendously underrated. Jimi Hendrix copied everything from him in the early days, including his use of distortion and feedback, the Marshall stacks (which Pete co-developed with Jim Marshall). But for some reason he always was a bit shy about playing lead, in spite of his great skill at it.

Stevie Ray Vaughan, of course. Nobody ever played from the gut like him.

Dave Gilmour was never fast (unless you sped up the record player), but his atmospherics were innovative.

If you include Bass, I'd say John Muang. He is so fast and his technique is incredible (playing all across the fretboard with a 6 or 7 string bass, very quick!) Big grin

I don't know what is worse, that this made it to reply 5 before someone mentioned Stevie Ray Vaughan, or that nobody yet has mentioned the one

the only

Eric Clapton.

BTW- Clapton once introuduced SRV as the greatest guitar player he ever heard. There is a reason nobody ever covers his songs.

There´s an awful lot of great guitarists.
Some that come to my mind right now, in no particular order:

Eddie van Halen

John Norum

Dave Gilmour

George Lynch

Dave 'Snake' Sabo

Al DiMeola

Paco de Lucia

Tony McAlpine

Joe Satriani

Steve Lukather

John Jorgensen

Jerry Donahue

...and many more.
I used to like Yngwie Malmsteen until I discovered he´s only faking his speed. For some reason I never liked Paul Gilbert and Jen Batten. Too clynical for my liking.
Btw, how about a best bass player thread?  Smile

6-7string basses. feh

there are only 3 types of basses in the world. 4 strings, 5 strings, and Fender Bass VIs/Music Man Sillouhettes which are really just baritone guitars. the rest, with the 4 lane highway necks, are crap.

The best guitar player to ever live was Roy Buchanan. To hear this man play sends chills up my spin. It's amazing you do not even mention his name, he was asked to play for the Rolling Stones but turned them down. This man did things with a Fender Custom the above mentioned names could only dream of. Look into the man you will see guitarists paying homage to the "Best unknown guitar player in the world".

To attend a Roy gig was to see thousands of like guitar players aged 18-35 with their mouths agape at what this man could do with a Fender. Please visit this web site and learn about the best. Roy Invented circuliar picking and perfect playing the neck like these smucks like Eddie Van Halen. This man played with soul not to sell records on the top 40 like Joe Satriani or Ego Van Halen.

I personally think Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine) is the most amazing guitar player to ever live, possibly with the exception of Jimi Hendrix.

Please have a look at a Roy Buchanan guitar given to him by the Fender Company, with some pictures of the master. Only 4 of these guitars were issued you can see James Burton, Roy Buchanan and James Cropper. Roy was given #0003

No mention of Gary Moore yet.

When I saw him I just couldn't believe that so much music could come from one man. He also sounded just the same as on CD and you all know how some people have to fiddle with the settings to sound good.

Yep, Gary Moore for sure, also one of the best guitar sounds (listen to the live version of "The loner", and you know what I mean!)
others (beside Hendrix, who is close to God!):

Nuno Bettencourt: Great Player, very "percussive" sometimes, as a drummer I just love that!

Eivind Aarset, very atmospheric and innovative, plays with Nils Petter Molvaer (for those of you who love really innovative Jazz)

Jimmy Page, not the best on the technique side, but if I listen to the riffs of Kashmir or Whole lotta love, I give a flying you-know-what about his technique!!

and finally, from Germany Berlin's finest: Big grin Big grin Big grin: Richard Bernstein/Paul Landers...the RRRRRRammstein guitar duo!!

Sorry for all those I've left out, but there are so many good players, and many have been mentioned here already!

Hehe...being a Hard Rock/Heavy Metal minded, here's my top 10 in no particular order:

Kai Hansen (ex-Helloween, ex-Gamma Ray) - blazing fast and a great componist too

Yngwie Malmsteen - fast altough a bit too barock style

Gary Moore - not only his "hard" records, but almost everything

Kee Marcello (ex-Europe, the one who replaced John Norum) - moody hardrock at the top level of virtuosity

K.K. Dawning (Judas Priest)

Rudi Schenker (Scorpions)

Tommy Iommi (Black Sabbath)

Steve Vai (I love his records with Whitesnake)

Eddie Van Halen

Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi)

I do agree that at present they are Germany´s worst (you call that "rock"?) band.  Wink/being sarcastic But if you are at all into rock music you should listen to the Scorpions records between 1979 and 1985. Matthias plays awesome solos on them. I can highly recommend getting hold of the 2LP WORLD WIDE LIVE ( for 3EUR on ebay.de).

How could I forget John Petrucci???

P.S.: At present Ralf Riekermann plays bass for The Scorpions, in the 1980 it was Francis Buchholz. But frankly they are not the cream of the crop.  Smile
