Space Shuttle Columbia Circus On Ebay

Mon Feb 03, 2003 12:20 pm

Anyone else happen to do a search on the Shuttle Columbia on Ebay since the accident? I couldn't believe the things that popped up, and only a few hours after the disaster. Of course there were the morons who posted "Columbia debris" but fortunately Ebay removed those bogus auctions fairly quickly. What is nuts is some of the prices people are paying for any kind of shuttle items. Check out this auction for a Columbia $5 coin that ended only a few hours after the accident...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3003546952&category=546

...the ending price if incredible. Is it just me or is that a ridiculous price to pay for an item....regardless of it being related to what just happened...

Anyone stupid enough to try and sell any debris from the shuttle will face up to 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine. The federal prosecutor in Dallas has already said they will nail anyone who tries to keep and/or a piece of Columbia.

Just imagine being the seller... thinking you'd get maybe $20 bucks off it... wow, I'd like to be in his shoes!  Wow!

I hope they nail those bastards good B757300. Anyone who would sell a piece of the Columbia is pretty dumb.

That link you are refering to about the auction almost has to be a fake bid. $1,000 is way too much, yet alone $13,000!

We're Nuts, that exactly what I was thinking and why I posted it. The start of that particular auction was way before anything happened so it was just this seller's good fortune...that is of course IF the high bidder actually pays...

Now all the people trying to capitalize on this tragedy are coming out the woodwork. I must have seen about 20 STS-107 patches for sale by a single seller..and the sickening part is that people are actually bidding hundreds of dollars on them! I can't stand how people try and profit off of others misfortunes. It happened after 9/11 and I guess there is no reason to be surprised now either.

About the people posting "shuttle debris" I hope the authorities go after them. I'm sure those listings were done as joke but this is no joking matter. I wonder if they can nail these morons on something.

COboeing777, read my above post. I didn't catch the part on what the charge would be but I'm assuming it is either theft of govt. property and/or impeding an accident investigation.

Get caught with a piece of Columbia and you'll hear this.

B757300,
I know there is some very steep penalties to pay if you actually do get caught with some shuttle debris. There's got to be some morons out there that already do and let's hope they do get caught so the FBI can make an example out of them.
What I meant about the bogus ebay auctions is I wonder if there something you can be charged with for just posting an auction like that but not even actually have a piece of debris. Sorry if I didnt make that clear before. No doubt whether they have a real piece or not they are going to hear wat you posted above..KNOCK KNOCK..FBI...

What do you make of this??? the bids were at $93,000 when I last checked. You think this sellar is legit OR you think she'll pocket the cash????

There is no way to verify whether or not she will carry out her intent, right? So this should be interesting!

Legally she has to, lest she be sued for the entire amount. But proving it is a different story....

I hope people realize that shuttle debris is federal property and is key to a federal investigation. It's a serious violation of federal law to sell or trade these parts.

A lot of people on eBay will have friends or relatives jack up the bids on various items in order to get higher bids from honest members. No person in their right might would pay 1,000,000+ for freaking patch. I can see a patch or coin going for a few hundred dollars but noting more than that.

ok, that $1,000,000 is BS now...charity or not, those bids have got to be bogus...like B757300 said, people do have friends jack up the bids, can't prove it, but you just know it happens. I'm still scratching m head at the 13000 coin...I am gonna watch the bidder and sellers feedback..I wanna see what kinda feedback they leave for each other.

But you can buy the patch here for $4:

I'd almost buy one but would never pay $21 postage to Ireland.

I'll save you a few bucks. If you PayPal me $18 (instead of $25), I'll send it to you in Ireland.

Let me know if you're interested.
