Neil Robertson aka The Guvnor Arrested
The following information has been received and is confirmed:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Neil Robertson is alleged to have sexually abused a primary schoolgirl on several occasions between September 1 and December 27 last year at his home in Troon, Ayrshire.

The 37-year-old is charged with attempting to rape the girl on September 1. He is charged with using lewd, libidinous and indecent practices towards the girl on December 27 and other dates not known to the prosecution.

A third charge alleges that he made an indecent photograph on the girl on December 27.

It is also alleged that between December 27 and January 1 he wilfully ill-treated the same child in a manner likely to cause her unnecessary suffering or injury.

At Ayr Sheriff Court on Friday afternoon (7/2/03), Robertson made no plea or declaration and was fully committed for trial.

He was remanded in custody.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks to all the members of PPRuNe who were instrumental in gathering evidence of Robertsons past history. It is my understanding that the information, which was passed to the police led to their investigation and his subsequent arrest and detention until trial.

Robertson was known on PPRuNe by the following Usernames; The Guvnor, Ceilidh, Scarebus321, Sid's Stars and at least 10 others. He was also known on other aviation forums as SAS23 and Lawyergirl amongst others.

As the matter is sub judice there will be no further public discussion on this case or previous history pertaining to Robertson. As and when the trial date is set and subject to any reporting restrictions information regarding the case will be posted here.

I would like to see the actual newspaper story this was in. Do they have police blotters in the newspapers in Scotland? Just a posting on Pprune is not what I would call a good source.

Can somebody please set us up with a link.

The US has nothing to do with it. This is Scottish law. We have sheriffs there too, you know.  Insane

May I suggest that a moderator locks this thread ASAP, there are all sorts of issues regarding prejudicing any future trial.

How can an internet discussion prejudice a trial? As far as I know, the only danger of prejudice lies with the jury, in which case the trial judge will order them sequestered.

Good point Hepkat. Thats amazing though, I can't believe someone would do that, but I guess out of 10,000 people you will get some bad eggs.

Wasn't this matter discussed and subsequently locked less than 24 hours ago?

'Former A.net member arrested' was the title IIRC.

The idea of trial by jury is that the jury makes a decision on the evidence presented to them in a courtroom, not idle gossip on a public internet forum or (in the Bowyer/Woodgate trial) what they read in newspapers.

I'm not saying that it isn't a valid topic for discussion but that may not be a legal one.

This has been discussed already. I agree with Hepkat 100%. I don't see where this can interfere with any trial that might ensue, but why don't we all wait a while before ascending like a lynching mob on Neil. And remember, guilty until proven innocent. If Neil did do this, he deserves time. If he's proven innocent, than that should be the end of it.

ROTFLMAO! Uh, yeah, that's what I meant. Although I'm sure, with my past tussles with Neil on here, some might not believe that!  Laugh out loud

Lol, one of the best slipups ever made here. Don't judge the guy unless he's found guilty. Is this even true? So far we've seen nothing official and I don't really want to believe a (perhaps madeup) news report from a person that hates him. As for legality, there probably ARE legal issues. I thought the mods were going to have a discussion and decide...

Once criminal proceedings are brought, the matter becomes sub judice meaning that under both English and Scottish law, the case cannot be discussed in the public arena for fear of prejudicing the trial, although events at court can be reported. This may be different to what happens in the US. For example, disclosing the identity of a suspect prior to an arrest is also forbidden in the UK.

As for prejudicing a trial, the Daily Mirror in the UK published an interview with the father of the alleged victim of an attack by footballers Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate. Despite the case going ahead on the basis of it being an "ordinary" assault, the Mirror repeated allegations that the attack was racist in nature. The trial subsequently collapsed, and the newspaper was prosecuted for contempt of court, being fined hundreds of thousands of pounds as a result.

That's the danger. Tread carefully.

I have chosen to close this topic for obvious reasons. Again (and as I said yesterday), it could be reopened depening on further discussion among the moderators.
