NHL Trade Rumors.....

Thu Feb 20, 2003 4:39 am

With the NHL trade deadline coming up in a few weeks, what trade rumors do you think will pan out? I definitely see San Jose trading Owen Nolan, and maybe even Teemu Selanne. L.A. could probably send a few of their top guys to other teams as well. I think there will be a blockbuster trade sometime around March 1 or 3, involving 3 teams (two in the West, one in the east). The Flames are rumored to be shopping for an offer for Jerome Iginla, although their GM denies it. The Blues are rumored to be interested in the Coyotes' G Sean Burke, and Tampa Bay is rumored to be hooking up with L.A. for a playoff player.

Maybe San Jose needs to trade everyone. What a dysfunctional group!

Well, as for my favorite team, the Islanders, the GM Mike Milbury has been rumored to have been talking with LA to recieve Ziggy Palffy in a trade. Concieveably, Palffy will come relatively cheaply, maybe Brad Isbister and a high round pick...the only problem is Palffy's 7.5 million dollar salary (ironically, the Islanders signed him to that contract). Perhaps they will ship Chris Osgood out, as the tandem of Rick DiPietro and Garth Snow has been playing well, St. Louis has been rumored to be looking for a goaltender, but as mentioned above it seems as if they have focused their sights on Sean Burke. If the Islanders are unable to trade for Palffy, look for them to acquire Geoff Sanderson or Miroslav Satan. They desparately need a talent to play with Alexei Yashin on the top line. I think one of the aforementioned players will be acquired before the trade deadline.

Sleekjet: You are incorrect, the most dysfunctional group is Glen Sather's $80 million dollar payroll Rangers...haha...I love it! Big grin

I almost see Owen Nolan not being a Shark by the trade deadline. What has been going on in San Jose? Last year San Jose was king of the Pacific Division, now it is all Dallas.

The question is, who would take him though? Maybe Florida? The Sens and Sabres can't afford him and I am not sure a whole bunch of teams are willing to pay him 7.5 million other than Tom Hick$ in Dallas and he has stated that there probably will not be any blockbuster deals on Dallas' part.

Florida is trying to lose money as well, they probably wouldnt go for him if he was too much...meanwhile Coach Keenan is desperately trying to get rid of winger Kristian Huselius, who is one of the more talented players on the team, and who shows potential to be an All-Star within 2-3 years...Keenan doesnt like the European players and their style of play, but Panthers management wants to keep Huselius badly...I think this is Keenan's last season in Florida, his coaching style just does not match the type of players he has and its probably affecting the team in some way...

I am not sure about NHL rumors, but I can see Pierre Lacroix pulling off another blockbuster trade. Thing is, rumors were circulating around Avalanche and Kovalev, and Kovalev went to Rangers. Rangers have the greatest collection of talent, size and offense, but they're unable to do anything. Maybe they should have gotten Hartley when he was fired. Guess they missed out... I can also see Avalanche being a bit quiet this season, since everyone is playing so well.

Trading Huselius could easily be the biggest mistake the panthers have ever made. With players like Bouwmeester and Weiss, the Panthers could be a serious contender in the next five years, and Huselius would be the perfect wing to complement that.

I really thought this was the year for San Jose too. It just doesn't add up.

They've got the veterans (Nolan, Damphousse, Marchment)
The speed and talent (Selanne, Marleau, Sturm)
The goaltending (Nabokov)

This year has been such a frustration...

Selanne will be the one to go, if anyone. His contract expires at the end of this year and I doubt he wants to come back... San Jose will try to get something from a playoff contender (that's how they got him in the first place, after all).

iI'm just happy to know that my hometown Atlanta Thrashers intend to be buyers instead of sellers in the trade market towards the deadline; the last few years, they traded the team captain at the deadline or before it. Since our Captain is on the shelf for the rest of the season, that streak will be coming to an end. I would love to see Don Waddell pull off a coup and get a good player without sacrificing too many of our prospects (last year, he traded a fan-favorite prospect Darcy Hordichuk, aka "Hordicheck" to Phoenix for a prospect that was still in Russia, and that player was traded as part of a deal earlier this season). There's only a few players that are definitely not on the trade block. Dany Heatley and Ilya Kovalchuk are the two definitely not to be traded from the team for many years to come.

I've heard that Nolan is almost a lock to be a Maple Leaf...

Carolina is currently shopping Bates Battaglia, Arturs Irbe (In the minors), and Veteran and future Unrestricted Free Agent Glen Wesley...none of which I think will go anywhere...Carolina is playing for next year, obviously...heck, 8 or so of our 20 man roster were at our AHL affiliate in Lowell at some point of this year, in Raleigh due to the load of injuries we've had...

I can't wait for the blockbusters to be made on March 11...I wanna see where Nolan, Palffy, Nurminen, any Buffalo player's go.

The talk of trading Palffy is lightening up now that the Kings have a chance to make the playoffs. They're only six points out of the eigth spot as a result of some stellar play as of late by Palffy, and great goaltending by Storr.

Well, after just coming home from the Sens-Panthers game I would love to see the Sens get rid of Radek Bonk. This guy skates like a geriatric and maybe puts in one productive shift a game. He probably leads the league in empty net goals so I dont care if he has 14 or 15 or whatever. Martin Prusek played perhaps the worst game I've seen a Senator goalie play since the days of Pieter Sidorkewiez. The 10 year old goalie from the mini game during the 2nd intermission played better than him. If the sens werent in first place with 84 points, I think we would be making changes, we need a skilled forward who can add some toughness..preferably a LW.. We have a lot of RW and C depth..
I do have to give some credit to the panthers tonight.. they have a young team and they will be a force in the southeast in a few years.. They probably have the best young goalie to build a team around right now..
