Why is the allroad the best?
Have a look at this video review. Don't think it was the best. The value for money part of the equation isn't there. Sure there are faster variants than the Volvo XC70s, but IMHO - if you want a rocket, a "lifestyle" 4WD isn't the way to go.
I'm a Volvo fan myself - good value compared to the German marques, great Q cars, low profile, responsible yet can be fun, and they don't have the associated 'badge snobbery' of certain brands.
I've driven the Cross Country on off road tracks, various muddy forest trails, etc and it's reasonably capable for a car based product. 209mm/8.2" of ground clearance is reasonable - it's not a truck, and doesn't pretend to be one. It's not as utilitarian as a truck.
The Haldex AWD system used in the latest S60/V70Rs, S60AWD & XC90 is also a fairly smart system - although it sends most torque to the front wheels during driving for fuel economy, it can send drive to other wheels within a fractoin of a wheel turn. The XC90 can do so much faster than the BMW X5
