What Is The Deal With Ball In My Can Of Guiness?

Tue Feb 25, 2003 4:41 pm

Well I broke my rule about not buying beer in cans.

Had a hankering for some Stout so I bought a fourpack of Guiness in cans. Was to cheap to do the right thing and buy bottles, I know I am very bad.

Anyway those cans have a feature I have never seen before. In each can there is this plastic ball that rattles around.

Why is the ball there. Does it keep the stout from seperating or does it take up space so there is less beer in the can?

Any ideas?

It's so Guiness beer even in a can keeps its thick foam to it when you pour it.

I saw a thing on Discovery Canada about it. If it's about beer, it's news up here.

Speaking of Guiness:

What is the correct technique for pouring Guiness into a glass? I know there's a way, where the foam is so thick that you can put a six-pence on top of it. Someone told me it takes an awful long time to do it correctly.

L-188,

You bought a can of draught Guiness which is different to the bottled variety.

To get the head you need the widgit, see the link.

Good choice by the way.

L-188, Guinness bottles also come with widgets now. I should know; there's a 24-pack waiting in my kitchen for some personal attention  Smile

It'll be a 12-pack tomorrow...

Well that explains it thanks guys.

I think I will stick with the bottle stuff in the future.

It seems to me that this beer had a "metalic" taste to it. I don't know if it from from the Nitrogen or from the aluminum can but I remember draft and bottled guiness being smother.

6pence? does that mean they make coins in denominations of 6?

Josh, an american used to 1, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50 and 100 denominations (with the odd 2 here and there)

I don't believe there are 6 pence coins in circulation anymore. Ireland is on the Euro of course. I don't know if Ireland had a 6p coin, but if the UK was running things in Ireland when the six-pence rule was adopted they did have a 6p coin, but not now that I am aware of. I only saw 1p, 2p, 10p, 20p, & maybe 50p but I'm not too sure on that one.

Here is a 6p coin from 1956 that my dad gave to me:

It is a fairly lightweight coin a little less in diameter than a US nickel and thinner too.

BTW, L-188, I hope you were pouring your Guiness into a glass and not drinking it out of the can. I was taking that as a given. You have to pour the Guiness to get the tasty head. The only time I resorted to drinking it strait from the bottle was when I was driving my brother and myself over to my parents' church for Christmas Eve festivities last December.

I wasn't doing it out of the can.

Unfortunatly I didn't have a clean class so I used a plastic cup.

When I opened one this night I did notice the sound of the nitro comming out of that little plastic ball.

Weird.

An old urban myth about Guiness is that to give it the distinctive flavour, they dumped a dead sheep in the bottom of the vats in the brewery!
Enjoy!

I honestly don't know if that is better then what the Mexicans do to get that unique taste in a bottle of Corona or worse.
