What Kind Of Computer Do You Have?

Fri Feb 28, 2003 10:54 am

As the topic of this thread states, what kind of computer do you have? What are the specs of your computer? I'm sure this has been posted before but I know that people get new computers all the time.

I'll start off.

Homemade, Pentium 4 2.4 GHz, 1024MB of Ram, 80 Gig HD, cd burner, dvd rom, XFX GeForce 4 128MB graphics card. Thats about it.

So whats under your computers hood?

I have a self-built, dual processor workstation, which I use for my coding is Visual Studio and my other work projects. Specs: Intel Pentium III Coppermine 1.0B GHz, 1GB ECC SDRAM, two 60GB Seagate Ultra SCSI disks in RAID-1, Plextor SCSI burner, Toshiba IDE DVD ROM, ATI Radeon 8500 128MB. (Yes, I'm paranoid.) My keyboard is of special note: it is an IBM 52G9658, also known as the IBM "M" type keyboard.

I used to have Apple Macintosh. My last - and still active - Mac is a 1996 bought Powermac 4400. I works without any problems. I NEVER had to reinstall anything in the last 7 years.

In 2000, I bought my first no name Notebook with Win98. It gave up life a year later. Now I'm also "proud" owner of a Acer Travelmate 521TEV (600Mhz PIII, 128MB RAM, 6GB HD) with the biggest crap ever invented: Windows!! About one third of my work with this crap is to find solution for different problems.

The next one will be either an iBook or Powerbook.

APPLE MACINTOSH FOREVER!!

Dell Inspiron 8200, which I got in July 2002 for ~$2700.

All engineers have to have laptops at MSU.

1.6 Ghz P-4M (lowest spec processor then)
UXGA screen (called Dell Ultrasharp, it's a beaut at 1600x1200)
30 GB hard drive
384 MB RAM (got it stock with 128 MB, added 256 from crucial.com)
nVidia GeForce440Go 64 MB
24x CD-R / DVD combo drive
Windows XP Home
Office XP Professional

Added a second battery and a wireless network card later, and they're pretty darn convenient. I also like my MS optical mouse (even though it doesn't work as well as our old [1996] Mouse Systems optical mice back home).

However, I'm EXTREMELY P'OED at Microsoft for its refusal to allow Javascript to work normally with WinXP. It is such a pain...

Work (use it the most)
made by Daewoo
PII @ 200Mhz w/128MB RAM
2Gb Hard Drive
32x CD-RROM
No sound, no vid, only a NIC,
but a 19" monitor, I "borrowed" from my home system

*you should've seen what it replaced...can you say "dumb terminal"?

Home
Custom Built PII @ 400Mhz
Asus Mainboard w/128MB RAM
6GB Hard Drive (Maxtor)
ATI Rage 98 8Mb vid card
SoundBlaster SBLive Sound
Modem,NIC
Toshiba 16x DVD
HP 32x16x40 (I think) CD-RW
ZIP 100Mb Drive
crappy 15" monitor I "borrowed" from work
Win98, Natural KeyBoard, MS Wireless Optical Mouse, Headphones

Laptop
Dell Inspirion 3250
Celly @ 433Mhz, 128MB RAM

ATI Rage Mobility 16MB vid
on-board sound
27"monitor (I Love TV-Out!),
actually 15"VGA Screen
runs Win98

I want to upgrade the home system, but lack of funds (and the wife) dictate I pay rent instead. Someday, one can always dream  Wink/being sarcastic

LOT767-300ER, I seriously considered getting an Alienware laptop. I've long wanted an Alienware, but they only started offering laptops about a month or two before I bought mine, and I'd rather have them establish a track record before I got one (since Dell is respected for theirs). But it certainly was tempting...although it wouldn't outperform yours since no laptop is a match for a good desktop.
