Socal: Worst Traffic Jam In The World?

Sat Mar 01, 2003 9:24 am

I have been living in the LA area since 1986. It seems to be getting worse everyday. I know many people who have horrendously long commutes b/c the traffic basically moves at 5-10 mph. Part of the problem is also that people here are willing to commute 60 miles or more so they can own a bigger house.
1. Is SoCal traffic the worst in the world?
2. Is it gonna get worse? Freeways simply are not keeping up with the urban sprawl!! Who was the genius that decided to go with freeways instead of a usable mass transit!?
Everytime I am stuck on the 405, I want to punch the butthead that decided this was the best way to travel in SoCal!
How are things where you live?

I lived in California from 1986-1988. However, nothing NOTHING beats traffic on the L.I.E. a/k/a Long Island Distressway....err Expressway!

Never lived in NYC area but isn't there an alternative to driving? How about taking the LIRR?
Here in SoCal, there is no other choice but to drive.
I wish we have a REAL train system here....

The LIRR and Metro North is very expensive, especially if you are travelling to the city from Suffolk or Fairfield County. Atlanta has some pretty sucky traffic, but you really gain invaluable experience while learning to drive there (Southern drivers suck). I couldnt imagine learning to drive in the country and then moving to Atlanta. DFW isnt too bad, you just need to know what to avoid and when to avoid it (635 during rush hour!).

The difference between Atlanta and LA is that in Los Angeles they actually expand the highways, in Atlanta it is still prevalent to see 4 lane highways through major suburbs.

Some of those SoCal developers would scream "SOCIALISM" if a public transit system were to be proposed.  Yeah sure
It would go against the American dream of owning a 4 bedroom pre-fabricated track home and driving a Lexus RX300 or Cadillac Escalade 100 miles to and from work everyday with millions of others.

I learned to drive in SoCal and despite all of SoCal's faults, they do have the best drivers. Everyone drives fast and aggressive. I tell you I love it!
Drivers up here in the San Francisco Bay Area are too damn passive!  Pissed
People will drive 60 MPH in the fast lane!
That is foolish!
However when it rains, people suddenly speed up.
I don't get it!

I am glad that I live and work in a city with a decent public transit system.
My monthly commute cost is only $35. I have unlimited access within the city.
Sometimes the high rent in the city is worth it.
I can go out drinking after work without worring about catching the last train out of the city at midnight or having to sober-up to drive home.

The worst traffic in the US is the Major Degan, hands down. I've been to Southern California etc but nothing comes close to the Major Degan from the George Washington Bridge to the Tri-Boro bridge. Nothing comes close, and if there's a Yankee game letting out your in for a bigger wait.

As I sit in that bumper to bumper traffic on 405, I can literally feel life being drained from my body.
Sometimes I feel tremendous rage that this incredible waste of time is due to some bonehead's poor planning and I am paying for it with the most valuable currency in life: TIME!!
I wonder if it's gonna get worse??

If you think Socal's bad, you should see the traffic at Runcorn UK when one of the lanes are closed!
