Happy Mardi Gras 2003 - Sydney!

Sun Mar 02, 2003 5:33 pm

Hey guys,

Well Sydney celebrated big time last night with another Gay and Lesbian mardi gras. It was another sucessful event that attracted 300,000 spectators and participants and showed the world the wonderful tolerance of our city and the love of life that we have.

Sydney for the past month has been a queer city, where international visitors have always felt (for years) that they could walk the streets of Sydney holding their partners hands and not feel uncomfortable.

I'm proud of my city for being the gayest one in the planet the one of the most tolerant cities for anyone in the world!

A stranger grabbed me and kissed me for being a Sydney local and said the following:

"Sydney is the most beautiful city in the world, the most accepting and the most amazing place I have been in my life. Thank you for making my stay here fabulous! Sydney people are wonderful! Happy mardi gras!!"

*yay* makes me cry.. So proud!

Happy Mardi Gras!

Was a great night.

Went to a friends place in Oxford Street and watched the parade. A little smaller than usual but a great night none the less.

!!!!! Celebrate Diversity! !!!!!!

I wish there were more people like you out there. It is a shame that among my community (Asian-Australian) there is a general taboo toward homosexuality. I have gay friends and they are some of the nicest and intelligent people I know. Your intelligence and integrity have time and time again been proven on this site when we occasionally meet people who are less accepting. Good work! And I'm glad you had a good time. You are a fine ambassador for this city, pal.

Fighting for the glory of the Australian Republic.

Thanks for the compliments *blush*. There is still discrimination everywhere and we need to be vigilant which is why this, the 25th G&L mardi gras was important to the community to still put on.

It might not have been as big or as glamorous, but still the people came and the people were shown a wonderful display of what our community stands for.

One of my co-workers said that people were over *Mardi Gras* as an event. Well I found that actually arrogant at first then a compliment! Why? Because it means that we are accepted more and more in mainstream society that we are no longer a spectacle!! That is a good thing!

Remember one thing though, at Mardi Gras's height, 1 million people flocked the streets of inner Sydney to witness the greatest parade in the world - thats 1 in 5 of the population. No other city or country could claim that a gay and lesbian event could ever attract that amount of people!

Roll on Sydney, your the gayest city in the world, but also one of the most beautiful and interesting.

And for every person that felt pride at the SY G&L mardi gras, then feel pride in yourself as this place rocks for you and will support you!

Actually Montreal could. Last summer, about one million people showed up for gay pride. That's one out of every 3.5 people in the whole city!
