Do You Shave UP Or Down?

Mon Mar 03, 2003 9:02 am

For those of you who think this thread is totally pointless and stupid.....I agree with you.
--------------------------

I don't grow a whole lot of facial hair, and I don't like facial hair, really.. I used to always shave downwards (cheek hair, moustache, and chin), and began to realize that it really wasn't that effective. Then, one day (last week), I decided, "ah, what the hell," so I shaved upwards, and man..was my face smooth. Totally took out the hair (albeit that green color that always stays behind).

I use Mach 3 by the way..but I'm thinking of trying out the Mach 3 turbo blades..

So what's it gonna be: Up or down?

I believe that you really mean to ask is "do you shave WITH or AGAINST the grain.

With. (Shaving against leaves one more prone to ingrown hairs)

dash- with or against?... depends on whether u r using a linear or rotary shaver.

eggd.- if you go against the grain, often times, when the hair regrown, it may change direction and not pierce the skin. So what you might get is a small pimple with a hair and pus in it.

BOEING747-700. I don't mind the occassional nick on my face but.....everything? And why? Please don't answer. Just the thought has mine tucked in so far that I fear I'll never get them out.

I use the Mach 3. I'm only 16 and my facial hair isn't coming in that quickly...I find myself shaving on average every other day. I use the Mach 3 and shave down. I hate the itchiness on my neck after the first day of not shaving! And if I scratch it, it gets all red and awkward looking. Hah..

Question: is an electric razor worth it? I'm afraid of having some skin reaction..I've heard they're irritating.

is an electric razor worth it?

I shave pretty much everyday although sometimes I will skip a day and I much prefer my Schick razor instead of my Braun Electric razor it does not get nearly as close to the skin as a regular razor. I got mine for xmas though so I didn't waste $100 dollars on it. I use it when I am in a rush.

Does anyone use shaving cream here? I don't, I will rinse my face with hot water and just fill the sink with hot water. As long as you rinse your face with hot water you won't get razor burn. It also doesn't take as long and I don't have to buy shaving cream.

I shave in a downward motion on my cheeks all the way to my jaw. I shave upward on my neck up to my jaw. If you do that, you're shaving with the grain of your whiskers and thereby reducing the chance for ingrown hairs.

(Might be an oldwives tale)

Shave up and hair will grow back thicker. Shave down (blades that way are at an angle) and hair will get the opportunity to grow "un-disturbed".

I shave up every morning. Sure, the hair grows back thicker, according to an oldwives tale like Gotairbus mentioned, (would make it easier to grow a beard if I ever decide to) but at least for a day, my face is smooth.

Regardless of direction, I recommend two things:

First-- prior to shaving, make sure you have really given your face a good softening(by either a hot shower or some form of pre-lubrication.

Second-- get a shaving cream/foam heating appliance(like many barbers use). I use one made by Conair. Once you try this method, you probably won't go back to cold cream/foam.

Forget shaving cream and get a brush and soap. Nothing better. If you have enough gumption get a straight razor. Kind of intimidating but if you keep it sharp (very sharp) the combo is unbeatable for a smooth female pleasing face. The best safety razor has no claim to getting my face where I really like it.
