Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic was shot and killed Wednesday in an apparent assassination, reports say.

"He's dead," the source from his Democratic Party said. Associated Press says police sources have confirmed the report.

Independent B-92 radio said Djindjic was shot at least twice in the chest while entering the government building in Belgrade. Journalist Misha Cvorovic says he died of his wounds in hospital an hour later.

One other person was reportedly injured in the shooting.

Police with machine guns have cordoned off the streets and are searching each and every vehicle looking for the assassins. Two people were arrested, witnesses said.

Djindjic, 50, was a co-founder of the Democratic Party. In 1996, he became the first non-Communist mayor of Belgrade since the Second World War.

He spearheaded the popular revolt that toppled former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic in October 2000, and had many enemies because of his pro-reformist and western stands.

He appeared to have avoided death last month when a truck suddenly cut into the lane in which his motorcade was travelling to Belgrade's airport. The motorcade narrowly avoided a collision.

Djindjic later dismissed the Feb. 21 alleged assassination attempt as a "futile effort" that could not stop democratic reforms.

The Bosnian-born Djindjic was married with two children

Damn - I heard he had been shot twice and was hospitalized. Not a good week for politics.

Yesterday, the Danish chairman of the parliament died of a heart failure, and today the Serbian PM is assasinated  Crying

I find that shocking and the lack of coverage by the European news stations disappointing. I will never forget him, my secondary school final French exam (two years ago) had a piece - articles followed by questions - on him which was rather easy.

"Djindjic later dismissed the Feb. 21 alleged assassination attempt as a "futile effort" that could not stop democratic reforms." Even though he has been cut down, what he said is still true. Such acts of violence are futile and can't stop the march towards freedom for all, free of the tyranny of local despots, imperialism or other unrepresentative control.

I haven't seen this blamed on President Bush yet but give it time.

What a tragedy. I hope Djindjic's ideals will live on, and this assassination will not be used by his opponents as an opportunity to further their own agenda.

TechRep, what a ridiculous comment to make at a time like this.

Sadly, this just proves that mafia state-within-a-state is operating in Serbia. Djindjic cracked down cigarette smugling, the police was on the verge of cracking some high-profile (mafia related) cases, a special prosecutor for organized crime was appointed receantly... Very, very shocking and sad. I hope that Serbia continues its reformist course though... The worst thing (other than of course his death) is the fact that in a nation that one is trying to reform and in which one is trying to build institutions, the person behind that is very important, and I can't see anyone else being as effective as Djindjic was...

TechRep, your comment was absolutely inappropriate. It has nothing to do with thread either. What has Bush to do with this?

Oh yes... Bush should have candidated in 1996 elections also, probably he would have won against CLinton and probably he didn't attacked Yugoslavia, and probably Milosevic would still be there and this wouldn't have happened... or at least wouldn't have so much coverage, since Djindjic wouldn't be pm...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

This is just one more blow to those freedom loving people who believe in democracy.

These criminals will find justice, just as those tyrants who live elsewhere will find theirs.

Serbia will live on and rise high.
