NHL Playoff Scenarios

Thu Mar 13, 2003 2:57 am

Crunch time in the NHL. When I noted that Dallas and Edmonton might meet in the first round for about the hundredth time (what are the odds?), it got me to wondering what delicious matchups are probable and exciting to you, the fan. Who do you want playing whom?

A Flyers-Senators series would probably be the best series in the East; A Vancouver-Colorado series would probably be the best in the West (even though it looks like the Wings may have something to say about it).

Well, there are two things I know for sure. My beloved Sabres won't be there and I do NOT want the Rangers to make it. I guess you'll see me cheering for the Minnesota Wild. I love the team and how it plays as a team, not a bench full of egos.

Philly-Toronto (Current 4th and 5th in the East) would make a good matchup early on.

It looks like the Isles will end up in 7th or 8th. My guess is that if the Isles end up in 7th we'll play New Jersey--a tough team to play against, mainly because they are so good defensively, and they have Brodeur. But, if Yashin can finally start hitting on all cylinders and our power play heats up then we have a decent shot at bringing the series out to 6 or 7 games...and who knows, the playoffs are a totally different animal.

Bold prediction: If the Isles end up in 8th place and have to play 1st place Ottawa, they will win in 7 games. Ottawa, despite being unbelieveable up-front, has a marginal defense, with Zdeno Chara (incidentally, acquired in the Yashin deal), and they have Lalime in net and it is his first year of actually being decent. The Islanders on the other hand with the addition of Janne Niinimaa have a very solid defensive top 4 (Aucoin, Jonsson, Hamrlik, and Niinimaa), and they are young enough to take huge amounts of minutes and potentially stymie the Senators offense. The Islanders 3rd line of Blake-Scatchard-Weimer have been having an unbelieveable season, and can dominate when the puck is below the hash marks, this will cause havoc among the weak Senators defense. Lets face it, Ottawa is not built for aggressive playoff games, and the Islanders can certainly use that to their advantage.

Detroit-Colorado, Vancouver-Detroit, and Vancouver-Colorado all will make great playoff series since they have playoff history between them. Also, all three series are entirely possible, yet I hope my Canucks will finish third and play the Wild. In the east, the only interesting match-up would be Philly-Leafs, especially after their pre-war build-up. This series is almost guarantee to occur. Should be an interesting playoff, and like so many years in the past, whoever wins the West will win Lord Stanley's Cup.

The two surprise teams in the west in my opinion are the Wild and Ducks. Keep an eye out for them. I dont expect the cup to go to either, but a first round upset isn't completely out of the picture. In the NHL playoffs, anything can happen, as previous years have shown us all too well.

But hey, the Anaheim Angels did win the World Series, so maybe the Anaheim Mighty Ducks might win the Stanley Cup this year!  Laugh out loud

Hey, I can dream  Big thumbs up

Im hoping my Panthers can get a late-season rally going and slip into the 8th spot...doubt it though...

A little history: The Vancouver Millionairs became the first West Coast team to win The Cup in 1915. They did it against the Ottawa Senators. Flash forward to 2003, I think it would be great to see the Sens and the Vancouver Canucks in the finals. Until then.....
