Favorite Travel Destinations

Sat Mar 15, 2003 12:23 pm

I don't think this has been discussed in a while, so here's my question. Where are your favorite travel destinations? Places that you'd go back to in a heartbeat if the offer came up?

My all-time favorite is my "second home":
-San Juan, Puerto Rico- Move over Disney, this is my "happiest place on earth". I always loved waking up to the scent of jet fuel & the weird noise of a DC-8 racing down the runway (the apartment we rented was across from SJU, and on the beach at the same time!) I've been there 8 times (1994-2000, 2002) & would always go back in an instant. Can't say enough about that island!

Also, off the top of my head-
-Paris- Been there twice, really enjoyed it.
-Daytona Beach, Florida
-Orlando, Florida

I'll probably think of others later on, that's just my list for right now.

For the tropical experience, I still dont anything quite beats Maui. It provides a perfect mix of commercialism and stunning natural beauty.

Runners up:
Barbados
St. Lucia
St. Thomas
St. Maarten

Historical Experience: Rome, totally unbelieveable... The fountains, the ruins, everything is awesome...
Runners up:
Athens
Paris
London
Toledo, Spain

For second time I'd like to go:
New York, USA
Dubai, UAE

For first time I'd like to go:
Ryadh/Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
Tehran, Iran
Tokyo, Japan
Sa'ana, Yemen
Peru

Places I wouldn't want to go (but would go if someone would offer me free journey with no time needed to waste on visas, etc.):
Baghdad, Iraq
Pyongyang, North Korea
Johanesburg, South Africa
Kabul, Afghanistan
Manyo other third world states which has not much history and what to see

Places I would never go to:

Many other sub-saharran African states, ravaged by civil war

"Historical Experience: Rome, totally unbelievable... The fountains, the ruins, everything is awesome..."

 Big thumbs up

Couldn't agree more! I've been to Rome 3 times. My last time there (Dec 20-27 2001) was the best. Hardly any tourists, the weather was cold, but not as cold as it was in Ohio at the time. I got to see a lot since I was in Rome for a week. The first two times I was only in Rome for 3 days. Can't wait to go back.  Smile

I also like Salzburg, Austria; Munich, Germany; Wengen, Switzerland; Venice, Italy. Very lovely places.  Smile

I wasn't too thrilled with Paris when I was there. I decided to go again and we got hit with a everlasting heat wave during our stay which made walking around very unjoyable. If I go back I hope it's a little more bearable than the first two times.

My all-time favorite destination would have to be San Diego, California. Fortunately, it's only a two-day drive or 1 hour airline flight. Southwest usually has a really good deal from SLC.

I just got back from going to Rome and Athens a week and a half ago. Both were great. I loved Athens and Greece in General. Great City. When we were there, there were very little tourists and the weather was perfect for being outdoors most of the day (50's and sunny). Would love to go back to Greece again.

The Netherlands and Belgium are very nice as well.

While the history in Rome is fascinating, I don't like the slums, poverty, begging, cheating and even stealing there is around. To appreciate it fully, one has to try to remember the places of interest and forget about their surroundings. Another thing I dislike about Rome is FCO.

I'd love to go back to Gibraltar someday. That place was totally amazing, I just loved the overall atmosphere there is. And, landing on a runway which is crossed by a busy main road is a unique experience, too.

Turbolet,
I agree with you about Rome, I thought that outside of the main tourist area, is like another world. I disliked the begging and the fair amount of trash on the sidewalks and the sides of the roads. Also, both in Rome and Athens everywhere you go people are trying to sell you something. We went to an outdoor cafe and people just walk by and set stuff on you table trying to sell you it. It's crazy. Other than that most of the people were nice and I enjoyed my trip.

Having visited Alaska twice in the last year(summer & winter), I can honestly say I'm in awe. If ever mother nature had decided to build her own personal playground, Alaska was the result. To stand in Anchorage at sea-level and look over a hundred miles to the north and see the majestic Mount McKinley climbing over 20,000 feet is amazing. To travel to Denali and stand near the foot of this giant is even more impressive. On a six-hour cruise from Seward, I witnessed dozens of orca, a couple of humpbacks, several bald eagles, seals, sea lions and a massive glacier calving.

It's safe to say, I'll be making more trips in the future. Maybe, if I'm lucky, Uncle Sam will let me live there for a while.

Favorite places, where I go quite frequently (i.e. at least once or twice a year):

1. Paris (IMO still the most beautiful city in the world)
2. Southern Spain (Andalucia) - good thing that my grandfather owns an appartment and a car there, so the only extra cost of a trip down there is for the flights

Other vacations spots I visit fairly regularly (i.e. every two years or so):
1. Michigan (Lansing)
2. Texas (San Antonio)
... because of the friends who live down there
3. Madrid/ Barcelona

Various nice places, where I've been to quite often but don't visit in a regular pattern:
1. French Atlantic coast ( about once a year during the 80s and 90s, but not for the last few years)
2. London
3. Berlin
4. Lake Constance (again, freinds living there)

Next on my agenda are Canada - I've only been to Toronto and Montreal so far - another trip to the Greek isles, to Ireland, to Mexico and to some Eastern Europe cities like Prague, Budapest and Warsaw.

I would love to visit Barrow, Alaska in mid-summer for the sheer novelty of it. Just to see the sun still out at 3AM. Other places I would like to visit: Macy's and Bloomingdales. I am planning a visit to Vancouver BC this fall. I can not get enough of that city!

Favorites in my own country:

San Francisco
Seattle
Alaska (Summer and Winter)

Hong Kong is the only city in the Orient I have seen so far. It was a great experience. The Octopus card offers the best transportation deal I have ever seen in one city.

As for Europe, my favorite cities have been:
St. Petersburg, Russia
Amsterdam
Brussels
Rome
Many places in Germany

Our next trip will hopefully be to Munchen, Germany and Krakow Poland--looking forward to both of these areas.

Well, sorry for you, but I can tell you that my city, Johannesburg is beautiful and there are many things to do and many things to see! Joburg is one of the greenest cities in the world; the nightlife in Joburg is, IMHO, the best in Africa; and the city is RICH in culture, history and diversity. I think you'd be missing out on a huge oppurtunity by not visiting Joburg because she truly is a city of gold!

1. Madrid, I left my heart here 2 years ago. Wonderful city if you ask me.
2. North Sea. I usually don't like sea at all, I find it boring, but the North Sea has something special (the windy climate? it's dark blue/grey color? maybe)...
3. Scandinavia (actually never been there, but going this summer)
4. almost anywhere in my home country, Italy, cities, countryside, lakes, mountains, everywhere.

Places I'd like to visit:

1. Tokyo, Osaka, the whole Japan
2. Iceland, I hope I can arrange a trip next year or so with some trekking maniacs friends of mine  Smile
3. China. I find it totally fascinating!
4. Argentina

There really isn't anywhere that I've been that I would not go back to and no where that I wouldn't go in the world (I'm VERY curious about the world and love learning about it.). The places that I would go back to in a heartbeat though are listed below:

PARIS- It's the most wonderful city in the world I think! It's beautiful and there is tons to do. I've been there twice and would go a million more times!

Barcelona- It's like Paris to me, but on a smaller scale and a different kind of beauty, but still tons to do and beautiful. The big trees lining many streats are so cool!

Avignon- I only spent a couple of hours there, but its the best town that I've ever been in. It's quaint, pretty, and has an interesting history.

Athens- This city is totally different from anywhere else I've ever been. There is so much interesting history there. I would love to go back to Greece in general though.

Chicago- I've been here a few times and it's just a lot of fun.

Also among my favourite destinations is a town called Uherske Hradiste (pop around 28000) in the Czech Republic. That's where my mum was born and my aunts and cousins live there. I love the small town atmosphere which dominates - kinda reminiscent of the island of Gozo where I live. The nightlife is refreshing, much more cultured and civilized than the savage and barbaric clubbing we have here. Nothing like a night out at a quiet cafe' with my cousins, sipping Viennese coffee and smoking Marlboro, the most popular brand of cigarettes in the Czech Republic.
And did I mention that at Uherske Hradiste - Kunovice (UHE/LKKU) airport there's a museum of airliners consisting mainly of L-410 and Il-14 machines? My yearly site of pilgrimage!

For me, nothing beats Hawaii, although I do like Ireland and the Isle of Man.
