1st Possible US Casualties Reported.

Fri Mar 21, 2003 5:59 am

It looks like Iraq may have gotten an Apache helicopter over the Kuwaiti border.

Dammit!
It's to be expected, I guess, but that doesn't make it any easier to hear.
Sincere condolences.

Coming from the Iraqis.... I don't take much stock in it. Wait till the pentagon confirms it before we get all worried.

NBC just annouced that crew is safe.

Not sure how much stock I want to put in this early report.

This sucks, I wonder who's helicopter it was. I was in an Apache unit when I was in the service.

NBC is saying that the helicopter reported taking gunfire, Made a hard landing avoiding it which knocked it off the radio, that is where thre reports of it being downed.

Apparently it got off the ground again, and made it back to base under power.

So did I Toady.

Having somebody report taking fire and then drop off the radio does not speak well to their safety.

I'm no Patton, but that f*%^&ing near-full moon can't help the situation. On some of those live shots from Baghdad I thought it was an early evening it was so bright.

The reports we have is that 3 helos are down with casualties on the last one, dont' think they were shot down though.

Fox is also reporting 1 marine killed in action.

Right,

You have the MH-53 that everybody made it out of.

Then you had that AH-64 that reported taking enemy fire then went off the air. Reported later that it had a "Hard Landing" but flew back to base under it's own power. My theory is that they went low to get under the shooting and kicked up a duststorm or brownout. Which caused them to lose contact with the ground and hit rising terrain. Pure speculation on my part but a brownout cause the first deaths for US forces in Afghanistan when an hovering Air Guard Blackhawk lost visibility and flipped killing two guys in the back.

Then you have this CH-46 that crashed with 16, 4 Yanks, 12 Brits 9 miles inside the Kuwaiti border. That one, might be interesting if a full report on the accident is done, The Sea Knight has a pretty checker history of late, mostly relating to the age of the airframe. Forces Canada has replaced theirs (finally!) named Labador with the EH-101 Comorant. The Osprey Tilt rotor is supposed to be the replacement in US service.

I hope that these are the only crashes but I doubt that will be the case unfortunately.

It is confirmed that the 4 US crewmen and 8 Royal Marines of 40 Commando were killed when the USMC CH-46 crashed in sandstorm conditions.
The chopper was returning the troops from a mission apparently.
