Do We Really Need 24/7 News Coverage?

Fri Mar 21, 2003 6:15 am

This is an issue that is bugging me just slightly. But do we need to have constant round the clock war coverage on the 24-hour news networks, plus all of the broadcast networks. With the current pace of the action there is not much news, really just a bunch of correspondants and analysts speculating what it going on, whilst watching "Live from Bagdad" in the background. Honestly I would much rather have my regular programing not be preempted to cover what might be happening. If something happens then cut in. Otherwise let the soilders and airmen do their job. War should not be made into a spectactor event.

Totally agree...even mtv is having war stuff on there....I can't stand all of it, all the channels are showing the same thing...infrared views of baghdad. it's interesting, until they say the same thing over and over again....oh well...its a sad time and hopefully the outcome will be good..

Just to clarify... I am all for having an informed public, and the level of access that the international press is getting is unprecedented. BUT... sometimes their just isn't news and I would like to watch Friends and Scrubs tonight... they can preempt Will and Grace though  Laugh out loud.

Just as war helps an economy out of recession, it also helps the networks boost their profits.  Wink/being sarcastic

But I agree. Last night, out of 5 stations on free-to-air, all 5 (ABC, 7, 9, 10 and SBS) has continuous coverage. It was a total pain in the arse...NO FOOTY SHOW!!

Yeah Im starting to get sick of this..

All local broadcast stations here (ABC, CBS, FOX, UPN, NBC) are all carrying war coverage. Even both PBS stations we get are carrying a live feed of BBC News. Hell, even CBET Windsor 9 CBC is carrying war coverage. All of this in addition to the 24-hour news stations.. Its crazy.

People want the 24/7 news coverage, I went to the gym last night, and when the time was up, people dropped the weights and ran to the TV.

Tried to get a beer at Hooters, and they wanted to watch the news coverage as well, sheesh Tits, Ass, and Bombs what a combo.

Hell, wife called me from the road and wanted to know if they bombing started.

Sad, but people want the coverage, personally, I wish they would reduce the coverage, the media is giving the people what they want.

Wishing all the best to the all of the armed forces and hope they complete their assigned missions and return safely.

Then don't watch the war.

"Green Acres" is on at 5pm ET here in Toronto.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

I like 24 hour coverage. This may sound twisted but I actually look forward to getting home from work and watching the War on TV Big grin

The 24/7/365 'news' wave is about Propaganda!. What we get is what the big guys wants us to now as information. Propaganda!

Yes we do need it.

Going to war is the biggest decision a country can make, war IS big, and it's big news and every war goes down in the history books. Unexpected things can happen in a war, events move on quickly, and viewers will watch it.

I think we need it on at least one channel...but I am really getting sick of all four of the major networks (fox, nbc, abc, cbs) cancelling regular programming just to show exactly the same thing as the regular "round-the-clock" news networks. This is a petty concern, but just like desertjets I was looking forward to Scrubs/Friends tonight  Big grin

Yeah, war shouldn't be a spectator event. We just got digital cable, and right now I'm looking at 178 channels of war coverage. I want to watch the Simpsons. Bush said for us to go about our lives as normal, so let me watch the simpsons like I do every night.

Isn't that what they said about Friends too???

Anyways, it is nice that the networks decided to run their regular line-ups tonight. Though I suppose if there was large scale action that would have been a different story.

It seems like war has become the newest reality series.

Oh, and Scrubs, as usual, was good tonight.

You can always drop a VCR or a DVD in the machine and watch a movie or something; or read a book; or just leave the boob tube off.

And remember, not everyone works a 9 to 5 job. I work from 12pm to 830pm, and when I get home, and after the kids are in bed, I'd like to see what's been going on with MY fellow countrymen who are in a war. Same with Joe Sixpack working the graveyard shift at the Ford plant or something like that.

It's on 24/7, but you don't have to watch it 24/7, so why does anyone care?

I think the news networks are kinda disapointed right now that the war is not as tense as first thought. The war that we were suppose to see or they thought we were going to see what one we have never seen before. It's only been two days we dont know what the war planners have planned.
