Iraqis Greet Marines With Smiles, Dancing

I just saw some video on MSNBC of Iraqi's being liberated in the small southern town of Safwan, Iraq. They we're smiling and dancing. Now, usually people dont smile and dance unless theyre happy. More of this video showed a marine cutting down what seemed to be a canvas painting of saddam off a building, with a liberated Iraqi taking his sandal off and beating on Saddam's face. This is simply fantastic for the Iraqis. What an uplifting video.

I've seen it too, and that looks good, really.
However, I'm prudent with TV images during war time, especially on CNN, considering that we see only what the military want us to see.

Seblino... the Pentagon is not censoring anything that the press is putting on the air. Quite a departure from the first war.

I have heard conflicting reports about the Iraqi reaction to advancing US and British forces. All generally positive, but not to the point of showering them with flowers and dancing in the streets. Though the footage of the Marine and Iraqi man taking down Saddam's portrait was interesting to see.

Great pictures, but keep in mind that this is to be expected in certain areas because a lot of Iraqi areas are known to be low in support for Saddam. For instnace the kurds, of course, in the north, and evidently some areas near kuwait in the south. Keep in mind, then, that you can't draw too much of a generalizatio nfrom any one set of pictures. I'm most interested to see what happens when Baghdad gets 'liberated'.
Next flight.... who knows.

It is heartwarming to see those who were living in fear 'liberated'. At the same time, you'll notice that most of the partyers are Shiite Muslims, archenemies of Iraqi Sunnis.

So we basically just inserted ourselves into a religious blood fued. And took sides. Ouch.

it is like looking at a big movie screen through a very narrow cilinder.

sometimes it shuts of un announced

at the end someone asks you how you liked the movie

According to journalists from different reputable media, censorship and media control is at least as tight as in the last war.

As other's have said, that could be expected in certain area's of the country. Also, the footage showed only like 6 people. The important response will be in Baghdad, I do hope to see a peaceful and happy response from the Iraqi people, but we'll all soon find out.
