L-188, thanks for just picking that picture of someone who is 'vandalizing'  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Now the naïve people will think: 'Oh, those bad anti-war protestors, lucky they were arrested', and this is also what those news agencies want. Once again: propaganda.

What losers. Just what do they think they can achieve out of this, do they think Bush will call it off? If they really are anti-war, why create a disorderly, war-like environment? They have nothing better to do & they’re just wasting their & everyone else’s time.

Fucking pathetic.

Don’t get me wrong; it’s not that I’m against protests (I’m from Hong Kong after all where there are protests so often you half expect to see these rallies every time you step out of the house!), it’s good that they are expressing themselves, but why do they have to cause disruptions?

They only make themself ridiculous, + the point for what they demonstrate.

Sabena, I wouldn't give a wooden nickle whatever the hell they teach you in your univesity. These are what people are being arrested for: vandilizing property; disrupting the free movement of traffic in cities; for defacing property.

I know you don't believe that's true, but that's simply because of that ultra-leftest education you're getting in Das Kapital University, right?

Look at all the anti-war marches that took place before the war, in dozens upon dozens of American cities, without incident, and very few, if any arrests. Why no mention of that? The fact is our Constitution provides you the right to PEACEABLY assemble. It does not give you the right to break the law.

Explain that to your professor, Sabena.

And CPH-R, maybe you should just put your picture next to Bush's. You had nothing of value to say, so, when that's the case, throw out a picture of Bush, who is not even the subject of this thread. Way to look shallow.

KLAX, I believe the opposite. After graduating from Karl Marx U, he should come visit here for about a year, and he'll find out his whole education at the hand of these Marxists was a load of bullshit. Imagine, how crushed he'll be when he realizes that EVERYTHING he's been taught at school, and everything his friends have said about the U.S., and everything his supposedly uncensored media has been telling him for a LIFETIME is a lie!

Many Soviet diplomats, athletes and performers found out the same thing over the course of 50 years, and, becuase of it, many defected. They found out the propoganda of Marxism was a lie. Sabena 690 may learn the same thing, if he's brave enough to come here and open his eyes to the truth.

Clovis, people thinking that other people with other opinions are not welcome in some countries, + remove them, or even wish that they were killed by Hitler (like you said today in another thread) does not show of a lot of credibility and respect. People like this have already been responsible for mass murders.

Do you have extreme right sympathies?

1300 people arrested in San Francisco, just because they protest against war...
I thought that the United States were the country of liberty.
A lot of people around the world are dreaming of the USA.
They have a dream of Freedom of thinking.
They have a dream of Freedom of speech.
How long are they going to dream, now ?

Teva,

Your as stupid as they come. Watch some video of it, THEY WERE DESTROYING THINGS. Thats is aginst the law. there have been several other marches aginst the war, and no one got arrested. Thes people were arrested because they were breaking the law. You anti-Americans need to make better points than just to come up with a story like this.

What's the problem here? If you break the law and become violent, destroy property, cause a disturbance, etc., you go to jail. If you don't break the law and peaceably voice your views, you get to protest. Seems simple and fair enough to me.

Of course, what they don't tell you is that almost all of the protesters who were arrested were soon released after paying a small fine. They weren't thrown in some gulag to rot or tortured because of their views, despite what some (who very ignorantly compare these to the behavior of dictatorships who DO actually treat disstenters this way) believe.

"They have a dream of Freedom of thinking.

Then they're very shelfish SOBs because they are protesting to prevent Iraqi citizens from having this very same thing. How ironic is that?

A month, two months, 6 months, a year, 2 years ago, few were talking about the misery of the people in Iraq. When the idea to launch a war was introduced a few months ago, the reason was to prevent a new 9/11 from happening because Saddam had WMD. Nothing was mentioned about the Iraqi citizens.
Today nobody is speaking about WMD, and the sole reason of the war seems to be to liberate Iraqi people.

This is a good reason to get rid of Saddam, and I think this could have been used in a very good way to get support from the UN and the rest of the world.

NWA,
I am sorry, but having different opinion does not mean this person is stupid.
That's something I have never done on this forum.
I am not anti-American. I am anti-war, and, because of this, I am anti-Bush administration, because he is lying to his people and to the world.
Don't transltate this in "I love Saddam". He is a monster, and I will not cry for him. I just consider that if you want to get rid of 1 person, why do you need to kill thousands of innocents, telling them "we kill you for your freedom".

About the protestors, maybe the media are responsible for what I have said. But I can talk only about WHAT I HAVE SEEN.
Of course, the Frech TVs choose the images they show (same as all the TVs in the world...) But all the images I have seen on the Freench TV had logos from US channels such as CNN, ABC, etc...
I have seen protestors destroying things and being arrested. And I don't complain about their arrest. How can you be for peace and support destruction? But those images were from other cities in the States.
Then, I have seen peaceful people being arrested in San Francisco, because they were blocking the traffic by being attached with chains. Those people were destroying nothing. They did not resist to the police. And those images come from an American TV channel.
Maybe there have been some people destroying things in this city too. You have stupid people all around the world. Even in France.... Usually, when there is a protest in Paris with about 500000 people to 1 million, you have 100 to 200 people in the mass doing some dammage. That's why my guess is that, on the 1300 to 1500 people arrested, only 100 to 200 were destroying. The others were peaceful protestors.

It does when they can't see that 1300 people have been arrested for breaking laws like disorderly conduct in blocking traffic in a city, or desecrating private property, or being violent. What else can in mean Teva?

The normal insults of Alpha 1 if he doesn't know what to say...

Are American demonstrations always so problematic than? Are you aware of how much 1300 (here I heard figures circulating from 1300 to 200) people are? It would still surprise me if so much people would break the law...

Those folks were blocking rush hour traffic, speaking as a commuter who works in NYC and has to drive about two hours home each day Protesters blocking my (or anyother commuters) ride home is not good.

It's actually the best out come that they got arrested, the road ragers would probably want a piece of them. In fact I think some folks did get out of their cars and throw some punches.

After working an 8-9 hour day the last thing people need is to have their commute home extended indefinetly by protesters.

It would not have been a big deal if they did this on the weekend or after 6PM, they choose that specific time (rush hour) to wreak havoc on thousands of commuters who are just trying to get home to cook dinner for their kids.

The French of all people should empathise with traffic.

Why were so little protestors in NY and Washington arrested then? Why so many in SF? Why were there never any large arrests in previous protests?

That number was arrested because they became violent, throwing projectilles and vandalising. The United States is a free country where you can protest with absolutley no hassles as long as you dont start trouble.
Just the same is true for France and other countries.

There are over 40,000 Protesters in NYC again today, and no arrests.

Why?, Because they're not breaking the law by blocking traffic or breaking things.

They're also doing it on a Weekend.

STT757, are you saying that 100000 protestors are not blocking the traffic?
How is it possible? Give me the secret.
For me , as far as I know, a protest will be on the street. Then, if it is legal to do a protest, by definition, traffic will be blocked.
15 years ago, in Orleans, I was in a protest with about 10,000 people only. There has been no incident at all. But I can tell you that the traffic was completely blocked.

This is NY, NYC knows how to handle large crowds.

They are marching down 5th Avenue, yet at each intersection there is a police baracade. The police let a certain amout of protesters walk by, then stop them. And let the cars go by, they basically only closed down one avenue for the protesters and keept them out of the intersections.

They do the same thing for New Years eve, St. Patricks day, Thanksgiving day parade, NY Yankees Parade, street festivals ect.

Here it is in case you missed it:

The police let a certain amout of protesters walk by, then stop them. And let the cars go by, they basically only closed down one avenue for the protesters and keept them out of the intersections.

This way the protest can go on with as small a disruption as it possible. Heck CNN just showed police herding some protestors who had broken off and started flooding down some side streets back onto the march route. It's called a controlled environment.

Also the protest is happening on a Saturday Afternoon, almost every weekend in NY during the warmer months their is a street or avenue shut down for a street festival, block party or community flea markets.

Saturday afternoons are the slowest traffic times in NY, they also had a rally on Thursday night which did snarl traffic around Times Square but that was a ralley in one spot (Times Square). They had a permit so police just diverted traffic around Times Square.

They were peacefull then too, and there were no arrests or vandalism.

For me , as far as I know, a protest will be on the street. Then, if it is legal to do a protest, by definition, traffic will be blocked.

That's not exactly correct, Teva. Protesting and stopping traffic are mutually independent. Protesting is allowed, stopping traffic is not.

However, because we live in a democracy, there is a way to obtain permission to have streets closed for a public purpose -- it is called a permit, and one can be obtained at a city hall. That makes stopping traffic legal; in fact, the police will do it for you. It's the permit that allows you to stop traffic, not your right to protest.

Why is this seemingly so complicated? Because other people have the right to use the street, too, and to not be stopped by protesters. That's why, when you get a permit, the police will reroute traffic so others are not greatly inconvenienced.

I realize that for some people consideration of the rights of others is a foreign concept, and it's a lot easier to dismiss this as the US denying people their freedom of speech. But just because you say so does not make it true.

I really don't understand why people are protesting a war to get rid of a terrible man that kills his own people.
THINK ABOUT THE PEOPLE OF IRAQ are on many of the anti-war protest signs.... I think protesters need to think about what they are saying,,, THINK ABOUT THE PEOPLE OF IRAQ and see what your protesting against.
I am disgusted with a lot of the protest's, in Vancouver a man in a wheel chair dragged a U.S. Flag infront of the American Ebassy with his wheel chair... What is that proving?? It just doesn't make sense.
To me it seems like a lot of the protesters are using this war to bring light to their personal views. In San Francisco there was people carrying a gay flag with the words NO WAR on it...

Sabena690, and the other simpletons on here who think these people are being arrest simply for protesting the war, listen to these facts, as reported by CNN earlier: Over 100,000 people in New York City were protesting the war on saturday, and 91 were arrested for disorderly conduct of one kind of another.

In Los Angeles, another 100,000 or so were protesting the war, and about 50 were arrested, basically for the same thing, disorderly conduct.

You do the math. Sound like to me the overwhelming majority were allowed to freely assemble and show dissent with their government, and went home peacably. It proves-once again-you don't know a hill of beans about the U.S., it's people, or it's system of justice or government. Seeing that you're reciving a marxist indoctrination, that's understandable.

Of course, you'll tell us, these are the numbers of a biased, censored network and that it's just propoganda right? Your marxist professer done taught you well, my boy.

I attended an anti-war rally today. Everybody there was peaceful and civilized and -- guess what -- no one even got close to being arrested (in fact, many people honked their horns in support when they drove by us, and only a handful of pro-war people acted immaturely).

The truth is, everybody is allowed to protest in the US, as long as they don't break the law. I strongly dislike the Bush administration and what's it doing to our country, but I also condemn any implication that there is no freedom of protest in the US -- that is simply false.
