Whats The Difference Between Racism And Terrorism

Sat Mar 29, 2003 1:12 pm

NOTHING.

If you believe otherwise, state your beliefs and/or reasons, just don't cite 9/11 or Iraq, there are more than enough ideas out there.

Futhermore, tell me about your thoughts or conclusions regarding this statement:

"People who hate can't not, so the only way to rid the world of racism is to kill them off."

My hope is that this thread causes you to think a bit [more].

Well, I'll take a shot at this...

From Dictionary.com -

Racism:
1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

Terrorism:
The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons.

So racism is harboring prejudice based on race, while terrorism is acting on these prejudiced beliefs in a violent way. Racism can lead to terrorism, and most terrorists are also racist, BUT not all racists are terrorists. In other words, I believe that the term "terrorism" is significantly more extreme than just "racism."

As for your quote, I, unfortunately, tend to agree that some people are beyond help in terms of their hateful views. But, as somewhat of an idealist, I try to find good in the worst people and would give everyone a chance to change their ways. I would never kill someone based on their views, even if they are hateful, because killing them would make me no better than they are.

Thanks for posting this; it really did make me think. It's nice to see at least some degree of intellectual discussion here.  Smile

Racism is a specific kind of hatred. Terrorism is used to act out on SEVERAL kinds of hatred. Also, as pointed out above, one is a mentality while the other is an act. So technically its not even close, but if you're asking 'is terrorism the result of racism', I guess the answer is 'sometimes'. If you're asking if racism is as bad as any other kind of hatred that preceded terrorism, I guess I'd answer 'certainly'.

Your welcome jeff.  Smile

Good answers so far, I like them.

Okay, if some terrorism can be traced into racist origins, how would one or many go about dealing with current racist states of mind to prevent those specific future terroristic events?

"...one is a mentality while the other is an act."

But if an act originates from a thought of doing it before hand, does that not qualify as a mentality, JetService?

"...but if you're asking 'is terrorism the result of racism', I guess the answer is 'sometimes'"

Could you give me an example.

That's an ancient question that mankind has yet to answer. Perhaps one of the pretentious kids on this forum knows the solution to this problem.

Uh... without citing 9/11? I mean, we have an entire group of religious extremists who call us infidels and wish for our destruction - isn't that a good enough example?  Big grin

Whats The Difference Between Racism And Terrorism

apples and oranges.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.
