Did it twice actually. First was in the summer of 1993: CGK-SIN (SQ) SIN-LHR (BA) LHR-AMS (BA) AMS-CDG (KL) CDG-LHR-BOS (BA) BOS-JFK (AA) JFK-AA), Japan">NRT-CGK (JL).

Next one was in the summer of 1995: CGK-SIN-ZRH-SXF (SQ) TXL-MUC (LH) MUC-ZRH-FCO (SR) FCO-ZRH-CDG (SR) CDG-ZRH-BOS-IAD (SR) IAD-SLC-SFO (DL) SFO-HKG-SIN-CGK (SQ)

ITs not that expensive...sometimes it is cheaper than a round trip fare. And many alliances have special deals for RTW fares (though routes and cities may be restricted).

As a backpacker, about 6 years ago.
BRU-LHR-CPT-JNB-PER-SYD-CHC-AKL-LAX-LHR-BRU
This was a deal on BA/QF, the leg CPT-JNB was on Sun Air.
This trip took me about 10 months.
Expensive? Not at all, I payed 819£ for the ticket from LHR to LHR, (also included were another 2 domestic QF flights, I choose SYD-ADL and ADL-BNE) another 5000BEF or so BRU-LHR-BRU and some SAR's for the CPT-JNB leg.

There is a website called "airtreks.com" that specializes in RTW fares. The lowest ones seem to start at about 1000$. There is a trip planner that can allow for you to customize your own stops. I have been playing around with the site for a little while now. It may be something to consider in the future. The confirmed RTW fare in some cases could beat the combined standby fares that I would have to pay. Check it out!

http://www.airtreks.com

By the way, I am not at all affiliated with the site. It just looks like something that I might use someday. As for the amount of time that a trip would take, it seems to allow for a minimum of 10 days. The trip could take months if you had the time and money. For me, it would be looking like 10 days at an airfare definitely below 2000$ to be able to consider such a trip.

AMSMAN: I actually made a stop at each of the cities, since it was my first time visiting Europe so I stayed 3 nights each in London and Amsterdam and a week in Paris before flying to Boston to visit my brother. Hence, the weird routing. I know it's not exactly "round the world" per se but I flew west from CGK and arrived back from the East  Smile

When I was a kid (I'm a life-long airline brat) I flew to 7 countries in 21 days, MIA-JFK-ATH-TLV-BOM-BKK-HKG-HNL-LAX-MIA, and with the exception of the MIA-JFK and LAX-MIA legs (which were on National) we flew on TWA with the same flight crew the whole way. The one thing I remember most, upon coming back home, was that my internal clock, along with that of my folks, was so off that we were getting tired at 4PM and getting up at 2AM, etc. Took a few weeks before we got back on track.

I would love to do this as a backpacker. Nonrevman, goin round the world in 10 days would be a hell of a time. But would it really be worth it. I would think you would be better off staying in the country for at least a few days to get a feel for it. You would be so run down on flying to if you did it in 10 days. Its hard enough going across the Pacific in Coach. Thanks for the website, I've been trying to find fares lately.

I've been fortunate enough to have set foot on every continent on earth. Born in Europe, grew up & still live in North America, & have traveled to Asia, South America, Antarctica, Africa, and Australia.

Once, in Spring 1993. I had to make two business trips to NC and Singapore and I arranged them as a RTW trip. I also took the chance to visit a friend who was studying in Davis, CA.
The air tickets costed around 5000$ total , and my routing was VLC-MAD-JFK (IB) JFK-RDU (AA) RDU-ORD-SMF (AA) SMF-LAX (UA) LAX-AA), Japan">NRT-SIN (SQ) SIN-FRA-VLC (LH).

Most of the 16-20 range of Airliners.net users have travelled around the world courtesy the "Daddy's Miles" Programme.

Actually, the only continent I haven't set foot on is Antarctica...(and yes, many of those trips were used with "Daddy Miles" but, now that I'm the Daddy, my kids will enjoy the same things I did as a kid - the ability to see places of history, not just read about them in a book)!

IAH-LGW/LHR-SIN
SIN-HKG-LAX/LAX-IAH
I work in the London and Singapore offices when not in Houston. They are leading maritime offices so I'm required to be in both offices for mgmt. meetings at least every five weeks.

Not really,

I wanted to go around the world when we had the money, but instead we just went to Australia, boo!!!

Now we've got no money!  Laugh out loud.

Its not that expensive, you can get tickets for as low as $1400. Don't know how much accomadation and food you get with that though Big grin

I have done this a few times on KLM/NWA for my business trips. RTW fare was about $4500, all business class. A sample of my itinerary:

ORD-->KIX-->AMS-->CDG-->MUN-->AMS-->ORD

Not a bad deal for $4500!
