City With The Best Public Transportation?

Wed Apr 02, 2003 2:23 pm

What city has the best public transportation in the wolrd? what about in the US? I live in phoenix, and there is just about no public transportation. I was in London and Paris a couple weeks ago, and London has the best public transportation i ahve ever seen, from the buses, to the tube to the taxis. Paris was also just behind, what do you guys think?

I'm going to say Tokyo has the most efficient and modern public transport systems followed by London, Paris and New York.

Boeing747-311, well I'm saying this from experience living in Tokyo and London. The frequency of trains, taxis, flights and buses is enormous compared to other cities. The accuracy of information to users, speed of the transportation, multi-lingual, on-time arrivals/departures and modern use of technology is in superb balance in Tokyo.

Don't get me wrong; London, Paris and NY have wonderful public transportation systems but for me Tokyo wins it. I guess all cities has its uniqueness and it makes all that more interesting.

Zürich in switzerland has a public trans. syste which is very good. they have the tightest schedule in europe for tramways and busses. But of course no subway etc yet in this comparatively small city...

From the cities I've been to, London has the best.
The Hague and Munich come close. Amsterdam is good too.

Best metro after London I've seen is Washington DC, didn't use the rest of the system there (we had a car for going places that were somewhere the metro didn't go, and out hotel was just a block or two from a metro stop).

In terms of coverage, frequency, and ease of use, the best are easily Tokyo, London, Paris and NYC.

The European cities have stellar public transportation systems.
We (U.S.) are lacking in this area.
For the US; New York is the best and Chicago is pretty good too.
On the West Coast; Portland, Oregon has a good system and San Francisco's could be good if it were 24 hours.

In my opinion, the best city transportation wise is not one with good public transportation system, but one which has wide streets and highways, lots of parkings and gas stations and cheap fuel.

Can't beleive what I am reading here ! London Metro is an utter sewer and NY is not much better.

All the cities in Japan have decent ones but they cost plenty and close so early.

My current fave (like right NOW) is Kiev. 50 kopeks (about 8 cents) to anywhere and it's clean, safe and frequent (ignoring the slave-labour used to build it of course). Worst by far is Houston. Not sure why they even bother.

Sao Paulo's is superb. They have over 800 bus routes and 11,000 buses with most headways being less than five minutes or less all day long. Over 2.5 billion people a year ride the buses.

The Sao Paulo Metro is one of the most advanced subways in the world. I took a tour of their operations facility last December. The trains are 100% automated right down to the opening and closing of the train doors (but there is still a Train Operatorfor back up). The trains are very frequent with trains arriving every 90-100 seconds all day. 800 million people per year ride this subway that is only 50 km long. The only downside is that it's pretty small for a city of 20 million (50 km is nothing), but they are actively expanding the system by building new lines and converting metropolitan rail lines in to Metro lines. The planned system will be complete in 2010 with 90 route km and 1.6 billion riders per year, surpassing NYC's ridership. There is a joke tha tthe Metro is clean, fast, safe and efficent, unlike the rest of Brazil, which is very true. The Metro is the cleanest subway you could ever ride.

Boston has one of the best in the world, there are not too many places in the Boston Metro area that you can't get to either on the T or by commuter rail.

In Zurich there are everywhere bus, tram or train stations available within a radius of not more than 200 m. During the weekend busses and trains run 24h a day.

Well for me, Edmonton, Alberta has one of the best Public transportation systems in Canada! Very clean, efficient and always on-time. Not to mention the wonderful LRT in downtown Edmonton.

I only have very little experience, but I did like the public transport in Paris. The one Hannover (yes...) has is also quite nice, but of course not comparable to big cities.

But if you really want to experience something special, go to Venice! I love the vaporetti! Love

For sheer volume, nothing in the world can compare with Mumbai, India. The local trains alone transport more passengers daily than many of the other cities discussed here have as their entire populations. Add to that the buses, taxis, autorickshaws, etc.. and you have a very impressive system.

The only city in which I've used the public transportation is Naha City, Japan and I was very impressed. They have a nice bus network which takes you around town and the prices weren't too bad if you travel within the city. A monorail is set to open late this summer which sounds really good.

Hong Kong was great! You could ride the airport train, the MTR (subway), a bunch of ferries including the famous Star Ferry, and even the Peak tram on one single card. That city definitely has my vote.

In the US, I am really partial to Washington DC's Metro.

Definitely NOT Sydney: Piecemeal approach, gaps in coverage and no integration of different forms of public transport. Melbourne is just as bad.

Paris, London, Hong Kong, Singapore YES.

PDX ALL THE WAY!!!! Tri-Met runs the main lines and light rail till about 1AM. Anywhere you could possibly want to go in the metro area is easy to get to! I lived in the Puget Sound area (Seattle/Tacoma) for two years. Wherever I wanted to go, Metro/Sound Transit/Pierce Transit took over 2 hours to get there or didn't go at all.
Small town transport usualy quits running about 8PM (Yakima, Medford, Tri-Cities, Boise) so they are not that great anyway

I put my vote to Hong Kong comparing with Singapore, Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

One big argument I want to spot out is a small city/country has an advantage as they don't want a lot of cars on their roads and therefore an excellent transportation system is introduced. Unlike Melbourne, Sydney is crowded and they just finished they Olympic Game (Melbourne had theirs in 1950s'). The monorail was introduced at that time. But their bus system is really much much much better then Melbourne and Adelaide...

Singapore, I travel a lot on their MRT and it is easier to use compare with the one in Hong Kong. However as I said before, a small country has an advantage.

I like seeing PDX on the list, and for a city of its size, it is definately good. In the US, however, I'd have to say SFO- good coverage, generaly good frequencey (except f market.. I think thats the one), good schedule (even late), and most importantly- I feel safe. While its not all shiney and new, I've never felt as freaked as i did in the NYC subway.

I have been on public transportation systems all over, and my vote goes to Singapore. They publish a book called "TransitLink Guide," which lists every bus route along with its schedule, prices, and connections with the MRT. The MRT trains are so clean you could eat off of the floor. I also think Washington DC's are nice.

The cities that I have visited that I believe have the best public transportation are:

1. Washington D.C.
2. London
3. San Francisco
4. Toronto
5. Chicago

I can only answer for US cities as when overseas I always have transportation provided.

San Francisco is first by a long shot as I tend not to need to go anywhere in the wee hours, Washington DC and New York are next. I cannot say anything about Chicago as I have always had a car available in that city. Any other US city that I've been in has pretty much non existent public transport unless you want to go downtown during business hours.

Moscow has a pretty nice public transportation. When I left there in 1996 they ordered Mercedes buses, which were clearn, roomy and even had air conditioning. Moscow also has subway, heavy regional trains, light rail, buses, trolleybuses (electric) taxi vans, regular cabs and a few river ports which can be helpful, even though they're mostly used for sightseeing.

London has a terrific public transport system, even though it's gotten rather expensive over the years (I remember being able to cross town for 8p).

The Paris system is also pretty good, but I have two complaints. 1) The Metro (subway) is really slow, compared to, say London, and they have a tendency to go on strike seemingly every other week.

Prague's Public transit system is pretty decent...my favorite in the world, but that's because I know it inside out. All other European cities I have been to have pretty decent public transit systems, too, except for Paris (which wouldn't have been bad, but they were on strike 3 out of the four times...figures), and the bus system in Birmingham was kind of annoying...a least the payment method. The only public transit I have ever been on here in the US was in D.C., and I can honestly say that it sucked. The US is not public-transit friendly, and that is a real pain in the neck when you don't have a car. Oh well, guess I get more excercise biking anyway  Smile/happy/getting dizzy.

San Francisco has good mass transit. We have multiple ferry companies that criss-cross the bay, the SF Municipal railway operates buses and subway/lightrail to all neighbourhoods of the city for a $1 fare, and the BART trains, Caltrain and a number of other bus companies operate services to other cities in the region. The Bay Area is perhaps the best place in the country outside NYC to be car-free.

Paris is much more like it. Gotta love those rubber-tyred metros!

Hey,

I've been living around DC for 6 years and 1 year in DC. You dont need a car to live in that city. You can get everywhere by Metro or MetroBus.
My hometown Rzeszów in Poland also have great public transportation. You can get anywhere you want by bus. All buses in my city are Mercedes and Volvos.
