Pfc Lynch Settles Combat Debate

Thu Apr 03, 2003 1:05 pm

You can still debate whether women belong in actual combat....but you can no longer debate that they can't fight it out with the best of them.

In debate class we are trying to pick potential topics for debate, and I suggested the issue of women in combat...it should be one that our class actually does...its more relevant than ever nowadays...

I'd bet the mortgage she'll here John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Road", at least a thousand times before the end of the year.  Big grin

My fear when she comes home? Some jackass at one of the networks will want to make a reality-based show about her. With her good looks, someone will start a show where a hundred young suitors try to get her to marry them. You watch...it will happen!  Laugh out loud

Considering that most gentlemen would never hit a girl, they have the combat advantage...plus I'm sure more than one Iraqi got his nuts mashed...and what would kicking a woman in between the legs accomplish?  Big grin That's right. Squat. I believe women first flew in combat during Operation Desert Fox. If I'm not mistaken.

Anyway...God Bless our Troops and hats off to PFC Lynch...glad to see she's ok.

Including the part about not being able to read a map so they were unfortunate enough to put themselves in that position and lose lives out of it

Is this another Blackhawk down incident

What else would you expect from the best trained and well equipped military in the world.

Including the part about not being able to read a map so they were unfortunate enough to put themselves in that position and lose lives out of it

With all due respect was this an appropriate statement to make?

Sounds like Pfc Lynch did her duty admirably. God bless her!

ROLL ON!

Dunno, well see in teh movie. Can't help but feel if they had read the map right they wouldn't have been there.

If I had been the one to have mis read the map and sent my mates to their deaths, I don't think I would be proud of i. no matter how hard we fought

Glenn: country you've never been to before, during combat operations, lots of tension and confusion, no doubt.

I think you need to cease and desist with such lowball comments, until you reach God-like perfection, which, by my reckoning, will be never.

Even more reason for me to be more careful reading the map.

One false move in a war zone is deadly. Make no mistakes about that.

But to clarify it for ya. Not disputing the bravado as america is full of it, it was the mistake at the begining that I couldn't be proud of.

LOL ! You bet. Although, I'd love to see her knee one of those "Bachelorette Himbos" in the you-know-what.

Of course, if it turns out she's gay, the boneheads will be baying for her to be trounced out of the military, bravery or not.

Sounds as if she performed admirably, coming from a such a male dominated culture must have been freaky for the Iraqis fighting her, when they realized her gender.
But all this talk of mass media interest sends a shiver down the spine, hopefully they'll give the poor girl some space to recover.

As far as what medal she's awarded, I would expect Bronze Star...the military is very conservative in matters like this...I would want to give her at least the Silver Star...the Congressional Medal of Honor is EXTREMELY hard to get...most get it posthumously...I think it would have to be proven that she saved a number of lives (which maybe she did) in order to get the silver or the M of H.

May I point out again she was a private she had no control over which direction they were going. She did empty here clip in some Iraqi ass though. I am betting she will get the Silver Star, since it looks like all her fellow soldiers were KIA and she was the sole surveyor.

What a tough lady. She surely puts many, many male soldiers to shame. And tells you some about the old "strong gender, weak gender" prejudice.

My hats off to PFC Lynch! Sounds like she kicked ass and took names!

I doubt that the Silver Star or CMOH is in the works for her... Probably a Bronze Star for Valor. You never know though. She will definitely get to wear the Combat Infantryman's Badge. No one who wears that silver musket on a blue field buys their own drinks in my presence. Never.

Way to go Lynch.

Alpha1,

Glenn: country you've never been to before, during combat operations, lots of tension and confusion, no doubt.

With all due respect you really ought to stop telling people what to do. Everyone has a right to an opinion, whether you like it or not.

I have absolute respect for this girlie and what she went through, but I too feel that in a war zone, during combat operations with lots of tension and confusion you really want to consider not getting lost. After all, had the driver NOT got lost this girlie wouldn't have gone through what must have been a very harrowing experience (which i'm really glad she survived).

Mind you, I do wonder about this putting the good of the one before the good of the many and whether they would have done that had she not been a blonde haired blue eyed dolly bird.

Anyway, that does nothing to remove the great feelings we should have over her freedom!!!!

Just found out that our friend of the family serving in 75th Rangers was "most likely" involved in the Jessica Lynch rescue mission. His buddy still on base in Georgia has indicated that the unit "made big headlines" Tuesday night.

His family is proud. Still scared for him...but very proud.

It was a mistake that has nothing to do with pride. It's called being a human being, something that you could learn to be.

My comment was to the fact that someone stated they were proud of the whole situation. Can't be proud of an incident that could possibly include you into the gene pool awards.

I am happy with my staus in life, wether I am a human being or not.

Dc10guy, that was a very intelligent and worthwhile contribution you made. Not to mention classy.

Ugh.

I still have reservations about women being in combat. I don't see any need to keep them out of any units if they want to serve, but I definately would seriously oppose a draft of women. And something I can't confirm but I've heard about is that women have a higher pain threshold level than men do. That would make me inclined to think that she actually had an advantage in surviving her injuries.

As long as there are men and women like Jessica Lynch serving their country the United States will stand.

What surpises me is the fuss they're making about her education and how they will pay for it. What's that all about? Here if you join the military they cover the cost of your education as you study part time. Dont' they afford you guys the same right?

ADG.

There is a program for matching funds while you are in the service and take classes. Took advantage of that once when I was in. If memory serves it covered about half the tuition.

There is also the college fund that promises money after you complete you enlistment. You buy into that program. The amount you can receive depends on length of enlistment. They keep raising the max but if memory serves it was 30K when I went in in 91. I am sure that it is higher for new enlistments.

Geez, they dont' look after your military do they L-188 ..... they should change that. Soldiers very rarely stay in for long periods of time, it really is in the best interests of othe military to offer incentives to bring people in such as educational assistance. I do have to say though that the cost of education in Australia is much lower than in the US so maybe that makes all the difference.

By the way, the girls family have stated for the record that she has NO bullet wounds and NO stab wounds. In fact here injuries now appear consistant with a motor vehicle accident.

Anyone got the *real* story as the story being thrown around appears to be far from the real one.

Bear in mind that it doesn't lessen my respect for her and my relief that she is back with her own.
